SPECEPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,675, dated April 10, 1888. Application filed January 21,1886. Serial No.189,290. (Mndeh) To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ARED M. BOUGHTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful \Vashing-lllachine, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in washingmachines in which a rocker with slats fastened to its bottom is caused to swing upon an axle which is suspended in axle-boxes in the sides of a rectangular tub with a con- OBXG bottom with slats fixed therein, so that the clothing to be washed is'pressed between the slats of the tub and the slats that are upon the under side of the rocker; and the objects 'of my improvement are, first, to afford facilities for the adjustment of the rocker, so that the pressure upon the clothes being washed shall not be so great that the water will be pressed out of them and they be rubbed while in that condition, and so that the water may be allowed to freely percolate through them while being rubbed, thereby quickening the pro cess of cleaning, and, second, to provide facilities for the retention of the axle of the rocker in the bottom oftheaxle-boxes in the side of the tub at thesame time that the rocker is allowed to rise to adjust itself to the thickness of the clothes being washed, thus changing the fulcrum of the rocker at the will of the operator and giving the operator greater power at the time when most power is required, and to conform to the strength of the operator. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the machine as shown by my in Figs. 1 and 3. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the machine as shown by line m a in Fig. 1, the slats d being the whole length of the bottom of the rocker and the tub, as shown in Fig. 3.
