UNITED STATES PATENT Erica.
CHARLES H. TRASK, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE DUPLEX SHOE TRIMMER COMPANY, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,609. dated April 3, 1888.
Application filed June 8, 188?. Serial No. 240,597. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. Teams, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boot or Shoe Sole Trimming Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The invention relates especially to a soleedge-trimming machine having a rest for the edge of the sole especially adapted for use in trimming the heel-edge of spring-heels. It is represented as organized in a duplex sole-edgetrimming machine, although it may of course be used in a machine having only a single soleedge trimmer.
The invention further relates to various features of construction and organization, all of which will be hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure l is a view in end elevation of the head of a duplex machine having the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in plan thereof. Fig. 3 is a view of the front, to the left of the end shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional detail, to which reference will hereinafter be made.
In the drawings, A is the head of the machine.
a is a shaft supported by the head A, having the pulley a,, carrying at one end a right shankedge trimmer, B, and at its opposite end the left shank-edge trimmer, B.
c is a shaft, also supported by the head A, having a pulley, 0, arranged to extend at each end beyond the fronts a a of the head A, and
carrying at one end the sole-edge trimmer O,
set as a right trimmer, and at the other end a sole-edge trimmer G, set as a left trimmer.
The shank and sole-edge trimmers represcnt ed are of the duplex variety, and each soleedge trimmer is covered in part by a hood, D, which is movable toward and from it upon the shaft 0. It is formed upon the end of the long sleeve d, and this sleeve has a bracket, (2", which extends upward and is secured to the end of the rod (1 (see Fig. 4,) so that the sleeve d is prevented from being rotated on the shaft 0. The bracket (1 also supports the oil-cu p (P,
and there is formed in the bracket 2. channel or passage, 01*. from the cup to the bearing on the shaft 0. The sleeve and the bracket are movable horizontally upon the shaft 0 and rod d, respectively, and a spring, (i surrounding the shaft 0, bears against the shoulder (2 thereon and against the end (2 of the sleeve, and acts in opposition to any movement communicated or given the hood D away or back'from the cutter which it covers, such a movement, for instance, as is given by the work for the purpose of uncovering or exposing a section of the cutter.
There is supported by the sleeve d and bracket cl, by meansofthedownward-extending arm 6 and the lower section or portion, 6, of the hood D, which has a hole, 6', the sole-edge rest E. The hood D has a hole, e", through which the rest E extends, and the arm 6 also has a hole, e", for receiving the inner end of the rest. This rest is located below the trimmer and a little in advance of a vertical line drawn through its center, (see Fig. 3,) and it serves as a support upon which the edge of the sole is steadied and rested while the heel end thereof, or a spring-heel, is being presented to to the trimmer. It is used, as a rule, only during the trimming of this part of the boot or shoe; but of course I do not confine myself to such use. It is made horizontally movable and horizontally adjustable in its supports, in
order that it may be moved entirely back from the face e of the hood D, and also so that its extent from the face 6* may be varied. Both the horizontal movement and the adjustment are obtained by providing the rod E with a screw-thread, c and by the nuts e 6 which fit the screw-threaded section of the rod and are adapted to be turned thereon against the arm 6 to lock the rest in place. When the rest is moved back and out of the way, it allows the surface 6 of the hood D to be used as a fingerrest, as described in my Patent No. 357,743.
Having thus fully described my invention, I
claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of 5 the United States- 1. The combination,in a sole-edge-trimming machine, of a rotary sole-edge trimmer, and a sole-edge rest, E, arranged in relation to said trimmer to act as a support or rest for the edge ICO of the outsole, and adapted for use in the trimming of the heel end of outsoles and springheels, as and for the purposes described.
2. The combiuation,in a sole-edge-trimming machine, ofa rotary trimmer, the horizontallymovable hood or piece D, and a sole-edge rest, E, extending horizontally outward from the face e of said hood or piece D, as and for the purposes described.
3. The combination, in aheel-trimming mamachine, of a rotary sole-edge trimmer, the sole-edge rest E, and means, substantially as specified, for moving the same into and out of operative position, substantially as described.
4. The combination,in a sole-edge-trimmin'g machine, of a rotary trimmer, the hood or piece D, formed upon the end of a sleeve, d,
which is movable upon the shaft carrying the rotary trimmer in opposition to a spring, the bracket d, the rod (1 and the arm 6, having a hole, 6 the hood or piece D, having a hole, 6 and the sole-edge rest E, extending through said holes 6 e to beyond the face e of the hood or piece D, as and for the purposes described.
5. The combination of a rotary trimmer, the hood or piece D, having the hole 6, the arm 6, having the hole 6 and the rest E, having a screw-threaded section, 6 and nuts 6 6, substantially as described.
CHARLES H, TRASK.
