Description

J. 0. .GARRETSON. I MANUFACTURE or SUGAR FROM SORGHUM.
No. 38,958. Patented June 23, 1863;
% jnvenfarf u UNITED Y STATES PATENT.- OFFICE,
JOEL c. G'ARRE-TSOIN, or PILOT ejRovn; IowA,
IMPROVEMENT-IN THE'MANUFACTURE 0F SUGAR 1120M sonenum;
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 38,958,,dated June 23, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known-that I, JOEL O; GARRETsoN, of
Pilot Grove, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved'Process'or Mode of Making Sugar and Molasses from the Sorghum or Chinese Cane; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full and exact description thereof, reference being-had to the accompanying drawing, and to the let- .ters of reference marked thereon.
r The nature of myinvention consists in the arrangement and combination of the'gradingpans, shutters, partitions'and skimmer .ex-*
tending over the apartments, and for the purpose of more easily grading and granulating sugar from sorghum. I i 7 To enable others-to make and use 'myi'nvention, Iwill proceed to describe the construc tionzandoperatidn the same.
The figure represents the boiler and general skimmer in perspective;
A, represents transverse partitions in the boiler. 4 v B-represents apartments in the boiler.-
0 represents apertures near the ends and eral skimmer and restingon partitions A, and;
on which it slides.
To commence operations, partly fill the boiler with common water and place it over a coininonfurnace. When thewater has commenced boiling the juice .is then allowed to flow from a reservoir orgt ank' into the boiler at apartment B, where it is boiled and'skinimed to a certain grade, when shutter'D, at A, is
opened and the juice flows through th'e aperture 0 into. the next apartmenu'B, where it'is boiled and-skimmed to another grade higher,
when thenext shutter, D, is opened and thenext apartment isfilled, and'so on until all the apartments are full, and'the sirup-in the last and finishing apartment is reduced to the consistency of common molasses.- The spout E- is then opened and the sirup is passed outinto a receiver or cooler. The spout is: then closed and the apartment is again filled from the next apartment, the shutter closed, and'the next in order opened and closed, untiljall the" aoart ments are filled with juice or, sirup. Y Add, now, some more common water to all the apartments, except the finishing one, skim, and proceed as before described. Thesirupis clear and palatable when thus manufactured, and gran latesreadily.
The general skimmerFis' operated by taking hold of the handleG, pressing it forward and downward toward the ioperator, sliding the skimmer to the oppositeside' of the boiler, raising the'handle again and draw it'toward-the op} orator, which will bring the skum in a'c'o'mpac 1 form to'the side of the boner next to "the operator, when the skum is removed by a' hand,
skimmer used for that purpose,"whichg-should be rinsed in common waterevery time it 1s used in a different grade of sirup toprevent carrying the green scum andothe'r impurities from one grade to another The sirup is con-" 'veyedfrom the cooler or-receiyer .to' the wide '-.shal1o-w tanks, and covered with thin canvas to'secur'e it from dust, when it will, by the-actionlof the. atmosphere, granulate in apnea time into mush sugar. 'Atthis stage a small quantity of common water is poured into the tank: and stirredwith the sugar .a short'time briskly. It is then dripped and dried infany of the usual forms, I By this'process an excellent article of sugar and molasses isiprodu-ced, i
What I claimas my invention, and desirefto secure by Letters Patent, is I The arrangement and combination of the grading-pans B, withshutte'rs D at the end of each partition A, with skimmer --F, extending over all the apartments B,'ar ranged andcon'ibined for the purpose of grading and granulating sugar, in the mode andranner de.
scribed.
' JOELC. GARRETSQN.
