Another object of the invention is to provide a method of the character described, wherein the flock is applied in a manner such that the thickness of flock can be easily controlled, and excess flock easily removed. I
A further object of the invention is to provide a flockcoated or flock-bearing film which can be pre-cut or die-cut to form areas of any desired shape or size for easy application to such areas or portions of the body.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent during the course of the following descriptron. I I
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
FIG. 1 is a plan view, on an enlarged scale, of a fingernail having a coating of flock thereon;
FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view, taken on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1; I
FIG. 3 is a plan view of a flock-coated or flockbearing film, embodying a modification of the invention, and showing the film as die-cut to provide areas to be removed from the film and applied to a fingernail;
FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional view, taken on the line 44 of FIG. 3;
FIG. 5 is a plan view of one of the removed areas of the film of FIG. 3, and
FIG. 6 is a cross-sectional view, taken on the line 66 of FIG. 5, but with the protective layer or lamination removed.
Flock, as referred to in this application, is a very short or pulverized fiber, used especially to form velvety patterns on cloth or paper or metal, and applied by blowing or shaking, onto the surface thereof. It is made, as natural flock, from woolen or cotton refuse, or, as synthetic flock, from nylon, rayon, polyester, or other synthetic materials, reduced or cut to small particle size or fragments by machines. The particle size, for the purposes of this invention, is varied, depending on the effect desired. Flock may be briefly defined as a natural or synthetic fiber, precision cut, in various colors, which impart a velvety or satin-like finish to the areas or body portions to which it is applied, in accordance with the present invention.
Referring more particularly to FIGS. 1 and 2 of the drawing, the fingernail 1, to which flock is to be applied, is first coated with an adhesive or adhesive base 2, such, for example, as clear nail polish, water-soluble or solvent-soluble adhesives, or other adhesives compatible with the fingernail or other parts of the body to which the flock is to be applied. Broadly speaking, the adhesive base can be any material which adheres to the body, and to which the flock will adhere.
A typical formula of an adhesive base, such as clear nail polish, is as follows:
Nitro Cellulose RS. second 15 parts Dibutyl Phalate 4 parts Ethanol 7 parts N-Butyl Acetate 29 parts Butanol 1 part Toluene 39 parts Pigment (or filler) 5 parts The base (clear nail polish or adhesive) may be applied to the nail l by brushing or spraying it onto the nail.
A coating or layer 3 of flock is then applied to the adhesive base 2, as by pressing the nail into the flock, or the flock can be dusted or sprayed onto the nail, to a desired depth or thickness, after which the flockcoated nail is permitted to become completely dry, and any excess flock is brushed off the coating 3.
In the modification of the invention in FIGS. 3, 4, 5 and 6, a sheet or film 4 is provided, of any desired di mensions, made of a plastic or resin, such, for example,
as polyethylene, polypropylene or polyvinyl chloride.
The bottom surface of the sheet or film 4 is provided with a coating 5 of a pressure-sensitive adhesive, which is protected by a backing layer or lamination 6 of a protective cloth, such, for example, as Holland Cloth, which is adapted to be stripped from the coating 5, as will be presently described.
The upper surface of the film 4 is coated with an adhesivebase 7, similar to the adhesive base 2, which has been described with reference to that form of the invention shown in FIGS. 1 and 2.
A coating or layer 8 of flock is applied to the base 7, in any desired manner, and to a desired depth or thickness, which is limited to the amount which will adhere to the base 7, and the adhesive base 7 permitted to dry.
The flock-coated film 4 may be sold in the form of a roll or sheet, delimited areas 'of which, designated by reference character F, are pre-cut or die-cut at the lines 9, to provide portions which can be easily removed or torn away from the sheet and are of a contour, which, as shown in FIG. 5, conform to the shape of a fingernail.
Such portion, as shown in FIGS. 5 and 6, is used by removing the protective cloth or backing 6, leaving the pressure-sensitive adhesive coating 5 exposed, as in FIG. 6, and then manually pressing the flock-coated film against the fingernail, to cause the coating 5 to adhere to the fingernail.
The areas F, as shown in FIG. 3, may be of any desired contour, for application to toenails, eyelids, eyebrows, or eyelashes, or, if desired, a single sheet may be provided with areas of different contours.
It is thus seen that I have provided several methods of and means for applying flock to portions or areas of the body for cosmetic purposes, and which methods and means are characterized by the use of controlled thicknesses or depths of flock.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the methods and means which have been described, but may be varied or modified, within the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A method of applying flock to a portion of a human body, which comprises applying the flock to a substance which adheres to said portion of the body.
2. The method, as defined in claim 1, wherein the body portion is coated with an adhesive base, and the flock is then applied to said adhesive base.
3. The method, as defined in claim 2, wherein said adhesive base is clear nail polish.
