SAD-IRON AND PLATE HEATER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 384,723, dated June 19, 1888.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, BRENT SHEARER, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Point, in the county of Clay and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Im provement in Sad-Iron and Plate Heaters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improved sad-iron and plate holder adapted to be attached to a grate; and it consists in a certain novel construction hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved heater, shown in connection with the grate. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the heater detached from the grate, a slight modified construction thereof being shown.

A indicates the heater, which is removably attached to the gratebars, as shown, by means of the hooked strips a a, secured to the upper portion of the said heater.

The heater is constructed of sheet-iron bent into shape, as shown, and the sections thereof suitably joined, as may be desired. It is provided with a closed top, a, and back a, wit-h an open bottom and'two depending sides, a.

The back portion a is of proper configuration to conform to the shape of the grate to which it is to be attached.

The front portion of the heater is provided with a handle, a", which is secured to thetop a thereof, and by means of which the heater may be removed from the grate, as will be readily understood. On the inner portions of the sides a suitable ribs are formed for the reception of a sliding shelf, A, which is situated, when mounted upon said ribs, in such a manner as to provide a space between the upper surface ofthe same and the under surface of the top a. A handle,a ,is also secured to the front portion of this sliding shelf A, by means of which it may be removed from the heater when desired. The sides a form supports for the heater by resting on the floor or hearth. As shown, suitable steps,A",may be provided at the lower ends of the sides a. for the purpose of providing rests for the sad-irons. As shown, the said steps may be either connected at right angles to the lower portion of the sides a or they may be secured at an acute angle thereto and projected upwardly from the lower portion thereof, having closed sides a, as seen in said Fig. 2 and represented by A This latter construction will be found very advantageous, as it provides an open space between the floor and the heater for the circulation of air-currents, thereby preventing the heater acquiring too high a temperature, and also prevent the irons heingshaken off by accidental jars given to theheater. It is obvious,however, that the steps and the sliding shelf may be dispensed with, if found desirable, the top surface, a, of the heater then being used as a heating-surface alone.

In using my improved heater the sad-irons may be placed on the top portion thereof, or

.rest in the steps when they are constructed with the heater; and in asimilar manner plates may bexplaced on the top surface of the heater for warming, or rest on the sliding shelf constructed as hereinbefore set forth.

'The novelty and utility of my improved heater are obviously apparent, and need not further be enlarged upon herein.

2. The improved sad-iron and plate heater, comprising the top a, the hooks a,the sides a. at the ends of the top, the feet A at the lower ends of the sides and arranged at an acute angle thereto, and the closed sides a, substantially as specified.
