Patented Nov. 29,1887.

v J. B. KELLY SHUTTER PASTENER.
11 i EV Mi NVENTOR W ATTORNEYS.
I WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES B. KELLY, OF CANTON, MISSISSIPPI.
SH UTTER-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,986, dated November 29, 1887.
Application filed April 14, 1887. Serial No. 234,777; (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. KELLY; of Canton, in the county of Madison and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Blind-Fastening, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates. to a blind-fastening, and has for its object to provide a device of simple and cheap construction whereby the blinds may be held closed in a convenient manner, both whenthe window is raised and when closed, and wherein when said window is closed the blinds cannot be opened from the outside.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out inthe claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a partial sectional view throughv the window. and sill, showing the device in perspective; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the lock bolt and nut.
In carrying out the object of the invention an angular plate,B,is secured in any approved manner to the inner side of the overlapping blind A at or near the outer edge thereof, the horizontal arm I) of said plate being shorter than the vertical arm 1). plate, D, is provided, having its horizontal arm 01, which is longer than the vertical arm d, pivotally connected to the horizontal arm of the aforesaid plate B, as shown in Fig. 1. About centrally the horizontal arm of the plate D an aperture, E, .is made, which, when the fastening is in its normal position, is adapted to register with the threaded aperture 6 of a lock-plate, E, secured in the sill, preferably flush with the surface. The vertical arm 01 of the angle-plate D is provided with an aperture, h, in its upper end, which aperture, when the window is closed, is made to register with the threadedaperture h of a lock-nut, H,similar to the aforesaid lock-nut E, secured to the A second. angular inner face of the lower sash-bar, H. A pin, H is attached by a length of chain to theinner sill of the window, the said pin below the head thereof being provided with an annular threaded projection, h as shown in Fig. 2, and the outer window-sill and lower sash-bar are apertured in alignment, respectively, with the plate-apertures e and h, as shown in Fig.
1, to receive the end of'the said pin.
In operation, when the blinds have been c1osed,the angleplateD is made to align with the angle-plate B, and if the window is not to he closed the pin H is entered through the aperture E in the plate D and screwed into the lock-nut E, whereby the blinds are held securely fastened. If, however, the window is closed down upon the plate D, the pin H will enter the aperture h in said plate and be screwed into the lock-nut H, the end of the pin passing into the sash-bar H. Thus it will be observed an effective fastening is secured both for the blinds and.the window which cannot be successfully tampered with from the outside. When the blinds are thrown open, the device swings with the blinds out ofthe way, the pin remaining attached to the sill ready for use.
I sometimes find it desirable in .practice to make the angular platesBand D in one piece.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent. y
The combination, with the blind A, an angular plate, B, attached to said blind, and a Second angular plate, D, pivoted thereto, said plate D provided with apertures E and h, of outer sill of a window having secured thereto a loclcnut, E, the sash-bar H,provided with a lock-nut, H, fastened to its inner face, and a pin, H attached to the inner sill, having a threaded projection, h adapted to enter said lock-nut,substantiall y as shown and described, and for the purposes herein set forth.
