Abstract

A hinge having an elongate pintle and an elongate tubular hinge member mounted on the pintle for rotary movement thereon and vertical sliding movement thereon. An inclined generally circular track surrounds the lower end of the tubular member and the pintle. A roller on the tubular member rides the circular track to raise the tubular member on the pintle as the tubular member revolves on the pintle. A compression spring bearing against the top of the tubular member normally urges the tubular member downwardly on the pintle to normally maintain the hinge in a closed door position.

65. FEED I m 02602; {M I TTORNEY HINGE BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to hinges of the type attached to doors normally maintained in a closed position by action of the hinge.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The hinge of the instant invention includes an elongate pintle having an elongate tubular hinge member mounted thereon for rotary and sliding movement. A circular inclined track on the pintle member is engaged by a roller on the tubular member so that as the tubular member rotates on the pintle it is raised with respect to the pintle. A compression spring engages the top of the tubular member to normally urge the tubular member downwardly on the pintle.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a hinge which will normally return to a closed door position when released from the efforts to open the door.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent in the following specification in light of the attached drawings.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a top plan view of the invention;
FIG. 2 is a side elevation of the invention;
FIG. 3 is an end elevation of the invention; and
FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 3 with the door shown in open position.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures, the reference numeral indicates generally an elongate hinge constructed in accordance with the invention.
The elongate hinge 10 includes a bracket 11 having an upright bar 12 which is adapted to be secured to a stationary wall. The upright bar 12 has a bottom plate 13 integrally secured thereto and extending perpendicularly outwardly therefrom. A plate 14 is integrally secured to the upper end of the bar 12 and extends perpendicularly outwardly therefrom parallel to the plate 13.
A ring 15 extends from the outer end of plate 13 up wardly and rearwardly to the bar 12. The ring 15 is welded at 16 to the plate 13 and is welded at 17 to the bar 12 to secure the ring 15 in an upwardly and inwardly sloping relation to the bracket 11.
A pintle shaft 18 extends through the plate 13 and the plate 1d and extends parallel to the bar 12. The pintle shaft 18 has a cotter key 19 extending through its lower end and a cotter key 20 extending through its upper end to secure the pintle shaft 18 in the bracket 11.
A hinge leaf generally indicated at 21 includes an elongate tubular portion 22 journaled on the pintle shaft 18 and having a length somewhat less than the distance between the plate 13 and the plate 14 to permit vertical sliding movement of the tubular member 22 on the pintle shaft iii. A coil spring 23 engaged about the pintle 18 engages beneath the plate 14 and on top of the tubular portion 22 to normally urge the hinge leaf 21 downwardly on the pintle shaft 18.
A plate 24 is welded to the upper end of the tubular portion 22 and is adapted to be attached to a swinging door conventionally by means of screws (not shown) passing through the bores 25. A plate 26 is welded to the lower end of the tubular portion 22 and is adapted to be attached to a door in the :same manner as the plate 24.
An Lshaped rod 27 extends from the outer end of the lower edge of the plate 26 to the lower end of the tubular portion 22 and is welded to each. A roller 28 is journaled on the rod 27 and is adapted to engage the ring 15 so as to move the tubular portion 22 upwardly as the tubular portion 22 is rotated on the pintle 18. The pintle 18 is mounted off center with respect to the axis of the ring 15 as can be clearly seen in FIG. 1, so that the leverage created between the ring 15 andthe roller 28 will decrease as the spring 23 is compressed and will increase when the spring 23 is expanded.
The ring T5 is provided with a notch 29 at the lowest point of the ring 15 to permit the: roller 28 to engage therein to thus maintain the door D in closed position against the force of a small animal.
Having thus described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that numerous structural modifications and adaptations may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
