Description
J. M. ROSS. REAMER FORIBORING GAS, OIL, 0R WATER WELLS. No. 373,908. Patented Nov. 29, 1887.
(No Model.)
luanlIInIl Il ll l EEPEE w- My n A Z :IIIIIIIIIIIII UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. ROSS, or BOWER HILL, PENNSYLVANIA.
REAMER FOR BORING GAS, QIL, OR WATER WELLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,908, dated November 29, 1887,.
Application filed April 11, 1887.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN M. Ross, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bower Hill, in the county of Washington and State pfIfennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reamers for Boring Gas, Oil, or Water Wells; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesarne, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.
Figure l of the drawings is an elevation showing the bits arranged in the tube for operation; and Fig. 2, a diametrical section thereof, showing the connection of the parts.
In the drawings, A represents the tubing or casing employed in boring Artesian, oil, and other wells; and B, the hit-stock, having the cavity or opening b at the lower end. On the surroundingwall of this cavity I arrange the springs C, and about the stock Iplace the collar D.
E E represent the reaming-bits, which are constructed with the cutting-edges e, the shoulders e, the squared top ends, e, and the lip e together with a recess, 6. They are prevented from turning by the studs 0, made fast in the stock B between the bits.
F is a washer, through the center of which Serial No. 234.397. (N0 model.)
passes ascrew, G, the latter working in a hole, b, of the bit-stock. It may be prevented from turning by a set-screw, H, which is tightly clamped at the top of the stock by a nut, as shown in the drawings. The lips e of the bits are fitted into the groove f of the washer and The lips e f thus form a hinge upon which the bits are turned in a vertical plane, as shown in dotted lines of Fig. 2 of the drawings, so as to be passed down through the tubing. They are pressed with the faces 0 bearing against the springs O, which throw them back as the shoulders e have passed below the bottom of tube A. They then assume the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and are ready for work.
What I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the stock and screw-bolt, of a washer and bits having the corresponding lips, 6 f, to form a hinge, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the bit-stock having the aperture 1) and the springs O, the bits E, with shoulders e and lip e, the screw-bolt G, and the washer F, having the lip f, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN M. ROSS.
