[57] ABSTRACT A powered snow shovel includes a single handle and is mounted on skids. The rotating blade includes breaker lugs extending at right angles from each of the blade portions adjacent the leading edge thereof in order to break up the snow prior to its being engaged by the blower portion of the blades.
2 Claims, 3 Drawing Figures PATENTED MAY '8 POWER SNOW SHOVEL BACKGROUND This invention relates to new and useful improvements in power snow shovels.
It is conventional to have relatively small snow blowers for home use but these are usually wheel mounted and are relatively wide so that they can only be used on relatively wide areas required to be cleared. Due to the construction thereof, such snow plows are usually relatively heavy so that they cannot be manipulated for use upon steps, landings or narrow walkways.
SUMMARY I have overcome these disadvantages by providing what is in effect a powered snow shovel having a single handle and being relatively light weight and small proportioned so that it can easily be manipulated to clear steps, landings or relatively narrow sidewalks. The relative light weight and ease of operation also enables it to be used by persons incapable of using the relatively heavy duty snow plows presently in use.
I provide these advantages by the combination of a scoop portion having upwardly curved wings meeting above the planar base with a skid platform extending behind upon which the electric motor is situated. A blower assembly is secured to the rear of the scoop portion and the blower assembly includes a combination breaker and thrower blade assembly so that the snow can be broken up and then thrown or blown through a discharge chute. A single handle extends upwardly and rearwardly from the back of the blower assembly so that it can be manipulated similarly to the operation of a conventional snow shovel.
With the foregoing objects in view, and such other or further purposes, advantages or novel features as may become apparent from consideration of this disclosure and specification, the present invention consists of the inventive concept which is comprised, embodied, embraced, or included in the means, method, process, product, construction, composition, arrangement of parts, or new use of any of the foregoing, herein exemplified mom or more specific embodiments of such concept, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings in whichz DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a side elevation of the device.
FIG. 2 is an isometric view thereof.
FIG. 3 is an isometric view of the snow breaker and thrower blade.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION Proceeding therefore to describe the invention in detail, reference character illustrates generally the scoop portion comprising a substantially planar base 11 and having a pair of curved wing portions 13 so that they can be secured by means of rivets, welding or the like as illustrated by reference character 14, said common line being substantially above the longitudinal axis of the base 11.
A skid platform 15 forms part of the base of the scoop portion and extends rearwardly therefrom, said skid platform also being substantially planar. However, it is provided with upwardly extending sides 16 which extend to a common stem 17 at the rear thereof as clearly illustrated.
A source of power taking the form of an electric motor 18 is mounted upon this skid platform and the necessary electrical conduit (not illustrated) may ex tend upwardly along the handle 19 to be controlled by a switch (not illustrated) in the usual manner.
A blower assembly collectively designated 20 is secured to the rear of the scoop portion 10 and consists of a casing 21 following the contours of the rear of the scoop portion and being secured thereto either by welding or by rivets as desired.
This casing is provided with a discharge chute 22 upon one side and towards the upper side thereof.
Within the casing is a combination snow breaker and thrower blade collectively designated 23 and shown in detail in FIG. 3. This includes a bearing hub 24 and the shaft (not illustrated) of the electric motor 18 extends through a rear plate 25 enclosing the scoop assembly and the bearing hub 24 is secured to the shaft so that the blade assembly may be rotated in the direction of arrow 26 by means of the electric motor 18.
The combination blade assembly includes two blade portions 27 extending upon each side of the hub 24, said blade portions having thrower blades 28 extending at right angles from the trailing sides 29 of the blades 27 and upon one side thereof.
Extending upon the opposite sides of the blades 27 are breaker lugs 30 secured as by welding or the like and extending at right angles as clearly illustrated in FIG. 3.
The aforementioned handle 19 is secured to a bracket 31 at the lower end thereof and this bracket in turn is secured to the rear plate 25 of the casing blower assembly 20.
In operation, the electric motor 18 is connected via conduit (not illustrated) to a source of electric energy such as an outlet box and the electric motor rotates the blade assembly 23 in the direction of arrow 26 and within the rear end of the scoop portion 10.
The shovel assembly, being relatively light, is easily moved against snow to be cleared thus causing the snow to enter the scoop assembly 10 and to be broken by means of the breaker lugs 30. It is then picked up by the thrower blades 28 and discharged through the discharge chute 22.
Various modifications may be constructed or performed within thescope of the inventive concept disclosed. Therefore, what has been set forth is intended to illustrate such concept and is not for the purpose of limiting protection to any herein particularly described embodiment thereof.
What I claim as my. invention is:
1. A snow shovel comprising in combination a one piece scoop portion, a rear skid platform extending from said scoop portion, a source of power on said skid platform, and a blower assembly secured around the rear of said scoop portion, said skid blower assembly including a back plate, a combination snow breaker and thrower blade, and a casing, a snow chute on said casing, said source of power being operatively connected to said snow breaker and thrower blade, and a handle extending upwardly and rearwardly from said 2. The snow shovel according to claim 1 in which said scoop portion includes a planar base and upwardly arcuately curved wings meeting centrally above said base, said skid platform being substantially planar and having up turned side edges curving towards a common rear stern, said source of power taking the form of anelectric motor.
