INVENTOR. JOHN E. FORD :2 36 I BY and z; WA /0605 1.. AOUJA/ 6 ATTORNEY AFRO PIC AND HIGH SPEED COLD AIR BLOWER COMBINATION BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION device of the above character which will make it possil ble to shape, groom and dry hair in the so-called Afro style without using hot air as is presently required for such operations.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the above character which employs a high speed cold air blower combined with an Afro Pic for simultaneously shaping and teasing the hair in the above described style.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a device which can be used with a variety of Afro Pic" attachments to suit individual requirements.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide such a device which will require a minimum amount of time to perform the above operation.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device of the above character which can be comfortably used by an individual at any angle relative to the headwithout the assistance of another person.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a device which can be powered by connecting it to an existing electrical power supply outlet or by a self-contained electrical battery, when such power outlet is not available, as on beaches, swimming pools, etc.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the above character which can be used without previous instruction, by individuals, while being capable of being used by hair stylists in professional establishments.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a device which is simple in construction and operation and can be produced at a reasonable cost.
These and other objects of the invention will become apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawing in which,
FIG. 1 illustrates the manner of using the device;
FIG. 2 is a partial side elevational view of the device, showing the manner of'attaching an Afro Pic thereto FIG. '3 shows the device in partial section with an Afro Pic" attached FIG. 4 is a partial top plan view of the device illustrating the adjustability of the Afro Pic" to different angles FIG. 5 is partial a top view of the device and the deflector ingegrally built into the Afro Pic" used with the former FIG. 6 illustrates the variety of sizes of Afro Pics" which can be used with the device FIG. 7 is a section taken on line 7-7 of FIG. 3 and FIG. 8 is a partial view, in section, of such a self-contained portable device, showing the blower motor and a dry cell battery for powering the same.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the device, generally indicated by the numeral 10, comprises a hollow housing 12 provided with a rotatable open end frusto-conical head 14, adapted to slidably receive pic 16 having air stream deflector 18.
The housing is provided with a handle 20 and, when the device is not self-powered, with an electrical cord 22.
As shown in FIG. 2, the frusto-conical head 14 is provided with an integral pocket 24 open on one side and an indentation 25, the Afro Pic being further provided with a projection 26 which locks the Afro Pics when slid into the pocket 24.
The high speed cold air motor and air blower 32 is seen in FIG. 3 and in section on line 77 in FIG. 7. It may be clearly seen in FIG. 3 (and also FIG. 1) that the cold high velocity stream leaving the open end of the head 14 is deflected upwards by the deflector, such as 18, shown in profile in these Figures and in top plan view in FIG. 6.
As seen in this Figure, the Afro Pic" 16 comprises a holder provided with a plurality of spaced stiff wires 30 which form a comb or pic. When it is desired to shape and style the hair, the device is held as shown in FIG. 1 with the wire comb spreading the hair while the stream of air, upwardly directed by the deflector 18 fluffs the hair.
For ease of manipulating the hair on the sides of the human head, the frusto-conical head 14 is rotatable up to about the housing 12, in either direction from the position shown in FIG. 1 to either of positions shown in FIG. 4. Thus the device may be conveniently held by the handle 20 on either side of the head while styling that side, by rotating the head 14 and with it the Afro Pic 16 in the respective direction.
The device may be operated by connecting it to an electrical outlet by means of cord 22.
It may also be self-contained, with the power supplied by a battery 36 connected by wires 38 to the motor 34, as shown in FIG. 8. This type of self-contained device will find practical application at beaches,
swimming pools and other locations where external power is either unavailable or inconvenient to use.
Having thus disclosed the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States of America is:
1. An Afro Pic" cold air high speed cold blower combination comprising a hollow blower top and bottom portions and having an inlet at one end and an open head secured to its other end, means for securing an Afro Pic to said open head forwardly thereof, and a high speed blower and motor for said blower secured in said hollow housing, said means for securing said Afro Pic to said head comprising a pocket integral with the bottom portion of said head and open on one end, said head having an indentation, said "Afro Pic" being provided with a projection, said projection engaging in said indentation and securing said Afro Pic in said pocket, said Afro Pic being provided with a deflector, said deflector directing a stream of air from said blower at an angle away from said Afro Pic for I fluffing hair whilesaid Afro Pic" is in engagement with the hair.
convenience in manipulating the side portions of a users head.
ing, for energizing said blower motor.
5. The combination as claimed in claim 1, wherein said blower is adapted for use with an external source of power.
