FOLDING VEHICLE-SEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No. 371,622, dated October 18, 1887.

Be it known that we, SAMUEL PENFOLD and GEORGE PENFOLD, of Guelph, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Omada, have invented a new and Improved Folding Vehicle- Seat, (patented in the Dominion of Canada May 18, 1885, No. 21,544,) of which the following is a full, clear; and exact description.
This invention relates to the construction of a novel form of folding vehicle seat, the object of the invention being to so construct and mount a seat that it may be used in connection with its vehicle-body either as a single or a double seat, and so that the body will appear in proportion whether the seat be used as a single or as a double seat.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional elevation of a vehicle-body provided with our improved form of folding seat, the parts being represented in the position they assume When adjusted for use as a single seated seat. Fig. 2 is a similar view representing the parts as they appear when adjusted for use as a doubleseated seat. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional elevation taken on a line corresponding with the line at m of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of a portion of the tail-board and its folding foot-rail.
In the drawings above referred to, 10 represents the box or body of a vehicle or sleigh, across which box or body there is mounted a crank-shaft, 11, said shaft being mounted in any proper form of bearingsas, for instance, the metallic straps 12. Upon the shaft 11 there are mounted two or more forwardly-extending arms, 13, that are slightly bent at the points a, and to the upper faces of these arms 13 there is rigidly connected a board or frame, 14, to the rear edge of which there is hinged an L-shaped frame, 15, the hinges employed to unite thetwo frames 14 and 15 being shown at 16.

The frames 14 and 15 are covered with upholstering, as represented at 17, and the vehicle-body is provided with a lower set ofsupports, 18, and with an upper set of supports, 19, said upper supports being made by forming shoulders upon the side posts ofthe vehiclebody, the object of these two sets of supports being to provide for the adjustment of the seat-frames to the position in which they are shown in Fig. 1, in which case the weight of the seat-frames is supported by the lower supports, 18, or for the adjustment of the seatframes to the position in which they are shown in Fig. 2, in which case the weight of the seatframes is supported by the shoulders 19.
The tail-board, which is shown at 20, is hinged to the under side of the vehiclebody, and this tail-board is provided with a folding foot-rail, 21, the said rail being pivotally connected to brackets 22, that are secured to the upper forward face of the tail-board, and in order that the tail-board may not be unduly depressed we provide limitstraps 23, arranged as clearly shown.
To the rear vertical posts of the vehiclebody we connect hooks 24, with which the folding foot-rail 21 is brought into engagement when the seat is adjusted for use as a single seat.
In arranging the adjustment of the seat illustrated in the drawings above referred to, the fact that a person sitting on a low seat must have more space in front of him than would be required if he were sitting on a high seat has been taken into consideration, and it will be noticed that when the seat is thrown forward to the positio n shown in Fig. 2 it occupies a higher positlon than when it is thrown back to the position in which it is shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1; The combination,with a vehicle-body, ofa crank-shaft arranged to rock therein, forwardly-extending arms mounted. upon the crank- ICO 14, an upper set of supports, 19, and a lower set of supports, 18, substantially as described. 15 4.
