SCREW-CUTTING DIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,175, dated October 11, 1887,
Applicaion filed January 22, 1887. Serial No. 225,219. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES D. OHELTZ, of Sheldon, county of Iroquois, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screw-Cutting Dies; and I do hereby declare that the following isafull,clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.
My invention relates to the construction of screwcuttingdies adjustableinacircularhead, with means for securing the parts together in their respective positions, and will be understood from the following description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a face view of my device, the parts secured together in position for use. Fig. 2 is a side view ofthe same with the outer collar removed. Fig. 3 is a side view of one of the movable dies. 4 is an inner face view of the same. Fig. 5 is a side view of the adjustable block for spacing the distance between the cutting parts of the die.
In detail, h is the head, secured to an open collar, by means of which it is connected to any suitable mandrel or stock. This head is crossed by dovetailed grooves gand g, which connect with a circular opening in the center. through which is passed the rod upon which the thread is to be cut. The cnttingdie is made in two parts,.d d, which have projections 12 p extending to the rear, and are of a shape to fit the dovetailed grooves mentioned, and the dies themselvesv are shouldered or cut away, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, so that their upper portions will move upon the face of the head It while their dovetail-shaped projections p 19 move, respectively, in the grooves g g.
b is an irregular-shaped block having angular faces adapted to fit more or less closely between the angular faces of the dies (Z d, and through this block is formed a slot, 81, to allow its adjustment alongthe line of thisslot, and a set-screw, s, entering the threaded openingin the head h, is intended to secure this block in any position within the length of the slot. Of course as this block is pushed in it will hold the dies at d farther apart,and when it is drawn back it will allow the dies to be brought nearer together. This adj nstrnent is necessary, in order that the dies may be used for cutting Fig. I
' of the projeetionsp p and the back of the block b, and by means of these screws, which pass through threaded openings in the collar 0, the dies (1 d and the block b may be secured within certain limits at different points, so as to hold the dies and the block at any desired distance from each other within such limits.
The dies are made in the shape shown, hav- 7o ing two angular faces, whose edges form the cutting edges of the device and operate directly upon the rod which is to form the bolt, and by forming the dies in this position it will be seen that they may be readily taken outand their cutting-faces ground and sharpened upon an ordinary stone, while, by means of their projecting shanks p 1), their operating distance may be regulated within certain limits when ever desired by means of the temper-screws t, operating against the ends of these projections, and the block b, operating in the angular opening between the sides of the dies.
It is obvious with the means of adjustment furnished by the temper screws t operating against the ends of the projections in the rear of the dies and the third temper-screw operating against the back of the block b that the tool may be easily adjusted to cut threads upon rods of different sizes. The dies d d are of course provided with screw thread cutting edges, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and within certain limits these dies are easily adjustable in the grooves g 9, so as to throw them farther apart or bring them nearer toeach other, and when so adj nsted they will be held in position by the temper-screws operating against their outer ends and the adjustable block b pressing against their angular sides.
I am aware that movable dies inclosed in a. circular head are not new, and do not broadly claim the same as my invention.
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:
1. A die-stock comprising, in combination, the head having dovetail grooves g g on either side of a central opening, the movable dies (2 d, having bases adapted to slide in grooves g g, the movable block I), having slot 81 therein to allow its adjustment to or from such dies, the collar 0, set-screw s, and temper-screws t, substantially as shown and described.
2. A die-stock comprising, in combination, ahead grooved to receive the bases of dies movable in dovetailed grooves therein and upon the face of the head, such dies having two
