REVERSIBLE ROAD SCRAPER AND GRADER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,922, dated March 6, 1888.
Application filed July 15. 1887.
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, HIRAM D. COOK, of Dry Brook, in the county of Ulster and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Road Scrapers and Graders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to road-scrapers, the primary object being to provide such machines with a reversible scraper and novel means for controlling, adjusting, and securing the same in working position.
Further objects of the invention are to provide effective mechanism for regulating the horizontal inclination of the scraper, to employnovel devices for adjusting the scrapersupports vertically, and to produce a roadmachine which shall be strong and substantial in construction. 7
The invention consists in the combination, with a supporting-frame, of depending standards or supports and a reversible scraper pivotally secured to said supports, and locking devices for securing the scraper in position.
The invention further consists in the various features of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

in corresponding lugs, d, projecting from a casing, d", within which is mounted a balancingwheel, D, upon a shaft, d The front ends of the plates 0 0 project outwardly from the frame, and are formed with openings to receive the hounds e of a draft-tongue, said hounds being formed, preferably, of spring metal and provided with projecting hooks e, to engage the plates 0 O. The spring force of the hounds 6 serves to hold them normally in secure connection with the plates, and at the same time permits them to be readily detached. Each of the plates 0 O is formed with an opening, 0, to receive the axle E, upon which are mounted carrying-wheels F.
G represents a diametrical brace having upturned ends, which are secured to the lower ring, a, of the frame. This brace is formed with a central opening, g, for a purpose hereinafter explained. The under edge of the framering a is formed with a series of notches, o the object of which will be described.
H H represent two boxes or casings for supporting the standards of the machine. These boxes are designed to be of the same construction; but I have shown in the drawings two different forms, either of which may be used.
The form of the box H is rectangular in cross section, the inner side being open throughout its length and the outer side recessed at the points h to receive the frame, as shown. Hooksh project outwardly from the box to embrace the upper edge of the ring (1., and oppositely-turned hooks h project to embrace the lower edge of the ring a. Thus the box is held upon the frame,upon which it may be readily adjusted radially. Near the lower end of the box H is pivotally secured a bail, I, which surrounds the box and is adapted to enter the notches a in the ring a,to prevent adjustment of the box. This bail is provided with a springJfi, which serves to hold thelocking-bail normally in engagement with the notches a but by contracting the spring the bail may be disengaged. Theupper end of the box is open, and the sides of the same are extended inwardly to form a bracket, L, and notched segment L between which extends a shaft,L,supporting a lifting-lever,J,a doubletoothed gear-wheel, j, and a locking-lever, j, the lifting-lever being provided with a stop,
j,to engage with the segment Liand asirnilar dog, j, to engage the adjacent teeth of the wheel j.
The box 11 differs from the box H in that its inner side is partially closed and its outer side open, and in lieu of the locking-lever j a pivoted dog, j, is employed.
K K represent the vertically adjustable standards, which are supported on the boxes H and H, and have a sliding movement therein. The inner side of each standard for a portion of its length is open, and the edges thereof are notched to constitute racks It. The teeth of each standard are in mesh with the adjusting gear-wheels j, and thus the standard may be readily raised or lowered by operating said gear-wheels by their respective levers.
L represents the scraper,which is provided centrally on its convex side and near its ends with brackets Z. One side of each of these brackets is extended to form bifurcated wings M. The standards are secured within the brackets Z by pivoted pins on, so that the scraper may be readily reversed edge for edge. From the inner side of each standard K projects a pair of ears, on, between which is pivoted horizontally a yoke, N, between the ends of which is pivoted a depending dog,O,whose lower end is forked to engage one or the other branch of the wing M, and thus rigidly hold the scraper in position.
The scraper L is provided between the brackets Z Z with a third bracket, 2, within which is pivotally secured, upon a suitable cross-pin, a guide-rod, 1?, whose free end extends through the central opening in the brace G. This guide-rod I? is braced laterally to one of the boxes by a brace, 12. From the construction thus described it will be apparent that the scraper may be readily reversed edge for edge, that the horizontal inclination of the scraper may be regulated by the radial adjustability of the boxes H and H, and also that the standards which support the scraper may be vertically adjusted to regulate the depth of the scraper.
Near the forward end of the scraper L, on its convex side, are secured two lugs, 77", and to the lug 1' is fastened by a loose pin, 1, one end of a brace, R, the other end being fastened in a similar manner to a box, S,which is held upon the lower ring, a, of the frame by means of the hooks s, and which can be rigidly held in any desired position 011 the ring a by means of a spring-bail, s, which engages with the notches a in the ring a. Fig. 8 shows the brace attached to the box S. The object of this brace is to take the strain off the standard K when the machine is in operation. When the scraper is to be reversed, the brace is removed, and when the scraper is reversed the brace is again placed in position by securing it to the lug 1*, which will then be the lowest, and to a box, S, similar to the one already described, located on the other side of the frame.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a road-scraper, the combination, with a supporting-frame, of depending scraper-sup ports, a scraper reversible by rotation upon a line parallel with its axis pivotally secured to its supports, and locking devices for securing the scraper in position, as set forth.
2. In a road-scraper, the combination, with a supporting-frame, of depending scraper-s11 pports, a scraper pivotally secured to the latter and provided with projecting lugs or wings, and pivoted locking-dogs to engage said lugs or wings, substantially as described.
3. In a road-scraper, the combination, with the frame, of adjustable standards, a scraper reversible by rotation upon a line parallel with its axis pivotally secured to said standards, and devices for locking the scraper in working position, as set forth.
4. In a road-scraper, the combination, with the frame and with adjustable standards, of a scraper-blade provided centrally on one side with brackets or lugs, within which the ends of the standards are pivoted, and also with proj ecting lugs or wings, and forked dogs pivoted upon the standards and adapted to engage the projecting lugs or wings to lock the scraper in position, substantially as described.
5. In a road-machine, the combination,with a circular frame the under edge of which is formed with notches, of standards for support ing the scraper,adj ustable boxes for sustaining said standards and provided with arms which embrace the edges of the frame, and springbail devices adapted to enter said notches and lock the boxes against movement after adj ustment, as described.
6. The combination, with the circular notched frame, of radially-adjustable boxes provided with arms to embrace the edges of the frame, and spring-bails secured upon the boxes and adapted to enter said notches, substantially as described.
7. The combination,withacircular notched frame, of radially-adj ustable boxes and means for securing the latter in their adjusted positions, adjustable standards arranged within said boxes and provided with rack-teeth, as described, a scraper secured to the lower ends of the standards, and lifting and depressing levers, notched segments, and locking-dogs secured upon said casings for controlling the vertical adjustment of the scraper, as set forth.
8. In a road-machine, the combination,with a circular frame consisting of rings braced t0- gether-by means of plates provided with bearings for the axle of the machine and with forwardly-projecting ears or arms to receive the draft appliances,.of radially-adjustable boxes, standards vertically adjustable within said boxes, and a reversible scraper pivotally secured to the standards, as described.
9. The combination,with the notched frame, of the radially-adjustable boxes and their locking-bails, the adjustable standards, and the scraper, and an adj usting-lever fulcrumed upon a pin extending across bracket'extensions of the box, and a toothed wheel and segment arranged adjacent to said lever, and a lockinglever, substantially as described.
10. The combination, with the circular frame, of a diametrical brace formed with a central opening, and a reversible scraper pivotallysecured to the standards of the machine,and also pivoted to a braced guide-rod,which latter extends through the opening in said diametrical brace, as set forth.
11. The combination, with the frame of vthe machine, of the plates 0 0, having projected perforated ends, and the tongue-hounds made of spring metal and provided with hooks to enter the openings in the ends of the plates, substantially as described.
12. In a road-scraper, the combination, with a supporting-frame, of depending scraper-supports, a reversible scraper, and abrace extending from one end of the scraper to the frame, substantially as described. I
13. In aroad-scraper, the combination,with a supporting-frame, of depending scraper'supports, a reversible scraper, and a brace adapted to be secured to one end of the scraper and to either of two adjustable boxes on the frame, substantially as set forth.
