Be it known that I, THOMAS L. PREvosT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county ofRacine and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Sand-Paper or Emery-Cloth; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to means for holding sand-paper and emery-cloth; and it consists in certain features of construction, which are disclosed in the following specification and claims.

In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I have illustrated it in the anneXed drawings, and will proceed to describe the same.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section on the line :0 m, Fig. 1, with a piece of sandpaper applied thereto. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the clamp ing-jaws.

A represents the base-plate; B, a rubber cushion secured to the under side of the said baseplate; G G, the clamping-jaws; E, the hand-grasp, and F the emery-cloth or sandpaper.

The rubber cushion B is elastic and will yield under moderate pressure, and is secured to the base-plate in any suitable manner; but I have shown it as secured by rivets a a. Upon the upper side of the base-plate A is secured a hand-grasp, E, of any desired construction. I may make said hand-grasp either solid or hollow, and recess the same for the reception of the thumb-pieces of the clamping-jaWS.

The thumb-pieces c o are provided on their inner sides with a stud or project-iomf, and are kept separated by means of a spiral spring, G, inserted between and pressing outward upon their ends. spring G inclose the studs f, thus serving to retain the spring in its proper position.

Of course it will be understood that the hand-grasp may be provided with a dividingweb and two or more springs. It would be necessary to employ two or more springs were the hand-grasp made solid.

Sand-paper and emery cloth and paper are placed upon the market in squares nine by eleven inches. I prefer to make my baseplate of such size as to receive a piece of sandpaper of a size into which such sheets can be regularly and conveniently divided without waste. For example, I have contemplated making it so as to receive one-sixth of asheet; but it may be made of such size as to receive onefourth or any other fractional part of a sheet.

In putting the sand-paper or emery-cloth upon the holder for use I place the holder upon a sheet of a proper size, and then turn the edges of the paper upward and over the edges of the holder beneath the clampingjaws, which are raised for this purpose and then allowed to descend upon the paper, holding it firmly in position.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- 1.
