SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,348. dated February 21, 1888.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH VVILKNS, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Amalgamators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in Letters Patent Nos. 336,970 and 345,096, granted to me, respectively, on the 2d day of March, 1885, and the 6th day oi' July, 1886, 'for amalgamators, to which reference should be had. In the said Letters Patent I have described and shown a mercury-holding vessel, in which is adapted to be revolved or vibrated a cylinder having a central standpipc open at the bottom, into which nely-pulverized ore, containing the precious metals, and water are fed. The ore is amalgamated in passing through the mercury in the annular space between the two vessels. The inner vessel is supported by rollers from the edge of the outer one.
The said invention consists in providing the bottom of the inner rotative vessel, which has a downwardly-projecting rim and partitions which divide the space formed by the bott-om and the said rim into four compartments,with a series of pins,which, as the said vessel is rotated or vibrated, stir or agitato the ore in the mercury and hasten the amaigamating process.
In the further description of the said inveir tion whichi'ollows reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure I is a vertical section of the improved amalgamator, and Fig. II an under side view of the inner vessel. Fig. III is a detail of the invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts of the invention in all the iigures.
VIn the said drawings, A is a stationary mercury-holding vessel, formed ofiron; and B, an inner rotative or partially rotative vessel supY ported by rollers c from the upper edge of the vessel A.
C is a central stand-pipe, having a hopper at its upper end extending to the bottom of the vessel B, where it is open. The ore and water are fed to this pipe and carried through the body of mercury to the annular space between the two vessels.
D D are wings secured to or formed as a part of the bottom of the inner rotative vessel, B, to agitato' the ore in the body of mercury; and E is a hoop, formed by making the wall of the vessel B project downward beyond its bottom, which surrounds the said wings D D. This hoop is perforated to admit of the exit of ore, which is thrown off by centrifugal force from the wings. The wings D are also perforated, to allow ofthe passage of ore from one triangular apartment to another.
F F are pins which project from the bottom of the inner vessel, as shown, to further agitato the ore in the mercury.
G- is a gutter or receptacle for amalgam formed in the bottom of the vessel A, and at one end it is provided with a door, c. The bottom d of the vessel A is inclined toward the gutter G, so that the amalgam will gradually lind its way to the said gutter.
I claim as my invention-- In an amalgamator, an outer stationary vessel, combined with an inner vessel having its wall projecting downward beyond the bottom, whereby a peripheral ring is formed, a central stand-pipe for feeding purposes extending upward from the bottom of the said inner vessel, where it is open, pins which project in a downward direction from the said bottom, radial wings attached to the said bottom, which divide the said pins into groups, and means, substantially as described, for vibrating the said inner vessel and its connections within and independently of the outer one, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
