G. D. PEARSON.
, OAR COUPLING.
7.70. Patented Feb. 1 4, 1888.
UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICEQ,
GEORGE D. PEARSON, on MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO GEORGE EDWARD DRUMMOND, TRUSTEE, AND ROBERT cow- ANS, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
CAR-COUPLlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 377,770, dated February 14-, 1888.
Application filed December 17, 1887. Serial No. 258,229. (No model.)
' To all whom it may'concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonen DEoARIE PEAR- SON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Montreal, in the District of Montreal and Province of Quebec,
Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andv exact description of the same. to The present invention has reference to further improvements in my previous invention in car-couplers for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted on the th day of December, A. D. 1885, No. 332,430, to so ar- 'r 5 range the coupler therein set forth that an ordinary link and pins may be used in combi nation therewith for further securing the cars together, and such improvements as may be hereinafter set forth.
The particular combinations of parts which form my present invention will be hereinafter set forth and claimed. 7 A
In the drawings hereunto annexed similar letters of reference indicate like parts, and
2 these will also be made, as far as convenient, to agree with the letters of reference used in the specification of thehereinbefore-mentioned' patent. v
Figure 1 is a side elevation embodying my present invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the invention shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line m m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4is a modification of my invention shown in section, also as taken at line :0, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an.
5 illustration of how one of my improved couplers may be used in connection with many of the forms of hunters at present in use. Fig. 6 is a detail of construction.
Letter A is a portion of the body of a car,
B the end of frame, 0 the dead-head, and D the strap or gland, all arranged as described in my said former patent.
In this specification the back of the hunter is the end which extendsunder the car. Therefore, when any part or thing is spoken of as being at the back of another, it will be understood that it is relatively so placed. The front of the hunter is the extreme end of the hunter which projects out beyond the car, and when any part or thing is spoken of as being in front of any other part or thing it will be understood to be relatively so placed.
E are the bodies of the bunters, (sliding in the straps D,) provided at their front ends with extensions F, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, having open spaces G and H, pivot bolts or pins K, and pawls L, constructed and arranged as in my said previously-patented invention, excepting the following changes, hereinafter mentioned:
Instead of the pins I. described in my said previous patent, I in my present invention form bridge-pieces I, integral with the ends of the extensions F, upon which the pawls L hook in a similar manner that they are described to hook on the pins I in my said previously-patented invention when both said pins I are in place.
In this present invention I extend the extensions F downward (see Figs. 1, 3, and 4.) an amount required for forming a suitable space,
. M, for a link, N, and asecond bridge-piece, I.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 three bridgepieces, I, are provided, forming two spaces, M, for the link N to be placed in, and
thus, if the cars are of very unequal heights, provide for the same. Through the bridgepieces I holes 0 areformed for the reception.
of pins P, and, furthermore, in the top bridgepiece I a counterbore, R, is provided of suitable size for the heads of the pins P to be received in, (see Figs. 3 and 4,) so that the said heads may not form any obstruction to either of the pawls L coming to the position shown at 3, Fig. 3.
In my present invention eyes may be formed on the upper sides of the pawls L for lifting them by, as shown and described in my said bunters of two cars can be brought together, after which the link may be introduced from the back of the space M, as shown by the position of the link 1, and placed in the position 2, (see Fig. 5,) the position 2 being also the position the link is shown in in Figs. 2 and 3. By this arrangement the cars may be coupled with an ordinary link and pins, the novelty in this case consisting in the particular arrangement of the parts by which (the ends of two hunters of two cars being brought together, and while the cars are stationary in such said position) the link N may be placed in position from the back of the space M, after which the pins P may he put in place. The abor e also enables one of my improved bunters to be engaged in a similar manner with many of the ordinary forms of hunters at present in use, as illustrated in Fig. 5, where A may be taken to be one of the ordinary forms of hunters, and P the ordinary pin therefor.
When it is desired to use the link N in combination with the pawls L for holding the cars together, the pawls L will be provided, their back ends being pivoted in the spaces H by the pivot-bolts K. After the ears have been brought together and the pawls L have assumed theposition shown in Fig. 3, or by dotted lines in Fig. 1, (the cars being station ary,) the pawls may he raised to a vertical position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, when the link N and pins P may be put in place, after which the pawls may be returned to the position shown in Fig. 8.
If the link N is made with extra length beyond the length that is required for putting the pins P P in place, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the link will only come into action in holding the cars together after the pawls have given out, or are not employed for holding the cars together, in which case the link N forms only a second coupling in case of any derangement of thesaid pawls L; but if the linksN are made a corresponding fit or length to the pins P that the pawls L are to the bridge-pieces I, the strain to draw the cars apart will be jointly borne by the one pawl L and link N in combination.
WhatI claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. As an improved article of manufacture or construction, a hunter-body having extensions and bridge-pieces, as described, said bridgepieces being provided with holes for the introduction of the coupling-pin, and with a space between them for the coupling-link, said space for the link being situated (as shown and described) in relation to the body of the hunter so that the link may be placed therein from the back thereof, the whole substantially as described and shown.
2. As an improved article of manufacture or construction, a hunter having extensions and bridge-pieces, said bridge-pieces being provided with holes and couuterbore for the reception of the coupling-pin and head thereof, and also provided with a space between them for the reception of the coupling-link, the said space for the link being relatively so situated (as shown and described) that the said link can be placed therein from the back thereof; furthermore, the said hunter being provided with a recess or opening, H, and pivot K, passing through the one end of the pawl and attaching the pawl thereby, and with said .pawl, the whole substantially as described and shown.
3. The combination, in car-couplings, of a hunter body, E, having extensions F, and bridge-pieces I, provided wit-l1 holes 0, and having space M, situated (as described and shown) relatively so that the link N may be placed therein from the back thereof, the said hunter having the said parts, with another hunter similarly constructed, and with pins P and link N, the whole substantially as described aud shown.
4. The combination, in carcouplings, of the hunter-body E, extensions F, and bridgepieces I, arranged to form the spaces G, H,and M, and the bridge-pieces I being furthermore provided with the holes 0 and couuterbore R, the said space M being relatively so situated to the body of the hunter that the link N may be passed and placed therein from the hack thereof, pawl L, pivot-boltK,by which the said pawl is attached and pivoted in the space H, one hunter having the said parts with another hunter similarly constructed, and with coup ling-pins P P and link N, the whole substantially as described and shown.
