AUGUSTIAULS, OF BROOKLYN, NEIV xoax.
POCKET-SCISSORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 377,637, dated February 7, 1888.
Application filed October 13, 1887.
To all whom zit-may concern..-
Be it known that 1, AUGUST PAULS, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scissors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in scissors of that description which can be folded and carried in the pocket.
The object of my invention is to provide in position when folded, and which can be carried in the pocket with safety. This object I accomplish by providing at or near the-pivotal point of the scissors a cam having suitable cam-surfaces, one of which is engaged by a spring-arm secured to one of the blades and acts to holdthe blades firmly against suitable stops on the bows. The other cam-face is engaged by the spring-arm when the blades are in an operative position, and acts to throw the blades open when the force of the hand on' the bows is relaxed, all of which is more fully pointed out in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a face view of my im- Fig. 3 is a face view of a modification.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. In'the drawings, the'letters A and B designate the two blades, which are connected by a pivot, a, and are provided on their ends with bows. O and D.
E is a cam, which is located about the pivot a. and attached to' one of the blades. In the example shown in Figs. 1 and 2 said cam is formed on the end of an extension, d, of the bow D. In Fig. .3 it is formed on the head of the pivot; but it may be directly affixed to one of the blades or formedintegral therewith.
The cam is provided with a flat face, e,which is engaged by a spring-arm, F, that is secured to the blade A on the bow side of the pivot a.
to normally hold the blades A. and B apart, and the latter are thrown open whenever the force of the hand on the bows is relaxed, as
Serial No. 252,255. (No model.)
the closing of the blades cau'sesthe contactface h of the spring-arm to ride upon a heel of thecam,andthespring-armistherebydeflected. When the scissors are folded to the position shown in Fig. 2-thatis, when the blades are turned backward about their pivot a-the spring-arm F engages a second fiat cam-face,
f, on the cam E, which face is approximately opposite to the face 0. The spring-arm now holds the blades firmly against stops 9 formed by lateral extensions of the bows O and D. It
is evident that one stop 9 would serve to check the backward movement of the blades; but by preference two stops are used. The points of the blades lie within the bows G-and D when the scissors are folded, Fig. 2, and are thereby protected from injury and also prevented from coming into'contact with and tearing the material of the pocket. The force of the spring-arm exerted upon the blades when the latter are folded is sufficient to prevent the same from opening inadvertently, and consequently the scissors can be carried in the pocket with safety.
I am aware that it is old to pivot the blades of scissors together in such manner that the blades can be folded back upon the bows and the points protected thereby, and I do not claim such construction, broadly. v
What I claim as new,'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the pivoted blades A B, a cam on one of theblades, and a springarm on the second blade in engagement with the cam for holding the blades in their folded position, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the pivoted blades A B, a cam on one of the blades, stops for ar- I b' A B, a cam on one of the blades at the pivot- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my point, stops on the bows of the blades for arhand and seal in the presence of two subscribresting the movement of the blades when ing witnesses.
folded, and a spring-arm, F, engaging the cam AUGUST PAULS. [L. s.] 5 when the blades are open for holding the same Witnesses:
apart and for holding the folded blades against W. O. HAUFF,
the stops, substantially as shown and described. E. 11 KASTENHUBER.
