Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES J. fr. RURoEY, oF sYRAcUsE, NEW YORK.
PREVENTIVE OF INCRUSTATION OF STEAlVl-BOiLERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,579, dated January 17, 1888. 'Application Elea september o, 1887. serial No. 249,209. (No model.) y
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. T. BURcEY, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Preventivts of Incrustation of Steam-Boilers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates tothe employment of zinc with iron or copper inside of steam'boilers, to produce by contact with the water of the boiler galvanic action, which vprevents incrustation of the boiler. Such metalsr have been used in various forms, but generally in such a form that the exposure of the metals to the water was insuflicient to produce the desired effect, and in some cases the renewal of the consumed metal is very difficult. These defects are sought to be overcome by my in- Vention; and to that end it consists of a pan of iron or copper having an open top and perforated sides, and a slab of zinc seated fiatwise, removably, in said pan, thereby presenting a large surface of'zinc to the water and materially promoting the galvanic action, and allowing the zinc slab to be readily renewed when required.
The aforesaid arrangement is illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a transverse section of a steamboiler provided with my improved preventive Y of incrustation, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical transverse section of the zinc slab and its holder.
A represents the shell of the boiler, and c c c the usual flues, extending through the boiler to conduct the product of combustion from the fire-box at one end of the boiler to the smokebox or combustion-chamber at the opposite end.
P represents a pan, which has'its entire top open and is composed of either cast-iron, or copper, or other suitable material, as before stated, and of any suitable shape and size to allow it to be introduced through the man-hole C and placed upon the fines c c c, as represented in Fig. l of the drawings.
@denotes a slab of Zinc placed flatwise in the aforesaid pan and occupying only a small portion of the depth thereof, and b b b represent perforations inthe sides of the pan immediately above or at or near the top of the zinc slab. The effect of this arrangement is as follows:
The boiling Water flowing over the Zinc washes from it a solution which passes out through the overflow ports or perforations b b b and impregnatcs the water. The contact of this water with the copper or iron pan produces a galvanized action, which maintains the incrusling material in an amorphous state and effectually prevents the same from incrusting theboiler and its flues. Upon cooling the water of the boiler the impurities of the Water precipitate in the form of impalpable powder, which is incapable of adhering to the boilershell, and can be collected in the bot-tom of the boiler, or in the mud-drum connected to the bottom of some boilers, and from thence the impurities can be blown out through the usual blow-off cock.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved preventive of incrustation of steam-boilers, consisting of the iron or copper pan P, having its entire top open and perforations in its sides, and the zinc slab a, seated in said pan and occupying the portion below the perforations, substantially as described and shown. V
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signe'd my name, in the presence of two witnesses, at Syracuse. in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, this 6th day of September, 1887.
CHARLES J. T. RURcEY. [LS] Witnesses:
HOWARD P. DENISON, N. M. SEAMANS.
