SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,154-, dated January 10, 1888.

To @ZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. KLINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Molltown, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots or Shoes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,

and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of` this specification. v

My invention relates to all boots, shoes, or slippers using a welt to connect the upper with the sole; and it consists in so shaping this welt that it will form an ornamental bead around the base of the upper, and at the same time make the connection more secure.

Figure l is a side elevation ot' a slipper, showing the bead formed when my improved welt is used. Fig. 2 is asection through IXY of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan of the welt folded into shape for use, and Fig. L.tis a sectional view of ,the same through V YV of Fig. 3.

In the drawings,`A represents the upper; B, the welt, of which B is the bend forming the bead; B2, the lower and longer fold, and B3 the upper and shorter fold. D is the insole, E the space for bot-tom'iilling, and F the outsole. i

The welt B is cut of sufficient width and lengt-h to form,when properly folded, a double layer of leather or other suitable material adapted to correspond with the outline of the shoe for which it is intended, and having the upper fold of sufficient width from the bend to permit of its being stitched to the upper audits lining` (the latter not being shown in the drawings) in the usual manner, as indicated bythe dotted line G in Fig. 2. The lower fold is made of greater width, so asto project beyond the upper fold, and is adapted to be pegged fast to the insole with the bottom tilling, which latter may be put in, asy usual. The welt having been properly securedto the upper and the insole and bottom-filling lbeing in place, the outer sole is attached by means of pegs or stitching, or both, as is commonly done, the only difference being that theV stitching H,uniting the edge of the sole to the welt, goes through the two thicknesses B2 B3, closely drawing them together and allowing the bend of the welt to project slightly bebeyond the sole, thus forming a bead around the sole of the shoe, extending as far back as may be desired.

The edges of the leather forming the welt are trimmed down thin, and it may be gradually reduced as it approaches the hollow of the shoe, so as to finally lose the bead, thus leaving that portion appear plain, as it ordinari] y does. readily accomplished by hand, may be more .quickly cut, shaped, and folded by suitable fold of the welt is very securely connected to the inner and outer soles.

I do not limit myself to the exact shape of welt shown in the drawings, nor to the exact method of connecting the same to the upper and outsole.

Vhat I desire to secure by Letters Patent are the following claims: I

1. The combination, with the upper, insole, and outsole of a boot, shoe, or slipper, of'a welt suitably secured to said upper, insole, and outsole, and projected beyond said upper and outsole,so as to form an ornamental bead, substantially as shown.

2. The boot, shoe, or slipper herein described, consisting of an upper, insole, and outsole secured to a folded welt, said'welt having its bend B' secured to and extended beyond the outsole,so as to form an ornamental bead, substantially as set forth.
