GAS-STOVE.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ALBERT WHALEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a stove or drum for heating air, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l-is a vertical section of the heater applied to an oil stove. Fig. 2 is aside elevation of the heater, broken away at the bottom to show its application to a gas-burner. Fig. 3 is a top view of the lower cone. Fig. 4 is a top view, and Fig. 5 is a side view, of the heating-chamber. Fig. 6 is a top view of the top converging cone.
The walls A of the drum may be made of any suitable sheet metal, and said drum is an ordinary cylinder. The lower end of the drum A is to rest on either an oil-stove, b, or a gas-stove, c, as preferred. In either case the drum A sets directly over the flame of the stove, the heat from which passes upward. An open-top cone, D, has position inside of the drum immediately over the stove-frame. The drum-wall has an inward shoulder, 0, which serves as a seat for the said cone, which is the lowermost part of the heater, and is provided near its lower rim with holes 6 and at its top with an opening,f, surrounded by a rim-flange, f. An air-heating chamber, G, has the shape of an inverted cone. At its lower end is an open neck, h, which couples with the rim-flange f of the top opening of the cone D. This chamber G has a flat horizontal top, 1', the closed central part of which is directly over the lower open neck, It. Around the closed center are air-escape holes 70. The tapered wall lot this chamber is provided with air-inlets m. The wall of the drum A is also provided with air-inlets a just above the seat 0, where the lower cone, D, rests. It will be seen that the lower cone, D, is heated by the flame,'and most of the hot air passes up through the opening f into the air-heating chamber G. The inlets 6, however, are not deemed essential. The heated top surface of the lower cone, D,causes an ascent of the superincumbentair and produces an inward draft of cold air through the air-inlets n. This cold air fills the annular space 1) and becomes warmed, and then enters through the inlets m into the air heating chamber G. From this description it will be seen that all the air in the process of heating must finally enter chamber G. The heating of the apartment, therefore, is effected by heating air in the drum and not by radiation from the walls of the drum.
An open cover, Q, surmounts the drum. The center of this cover has a hole, 1', wherein any vessel may be set for heating water or cooking. In the drawings this center hole, r, is shown as occupied by an urn, s. In order to direct the heat at the said center hole, 1', an open-top converging cone, t, is employed, which rests on the airheating chamber G and concentrates the hot air.
The several parts of this heater may he made of any size or any material which the judg ment of the mechanic or the necessities of the case may suggest.
Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the United States-- An air-heating drum comprising the exterior cylinder, A, provided with air-inlets n, the lower cone, D, having a top opening, f, and lower rim seated against the inside of the cyl inder-wallbelowsaid air-inlets,and an air-heating-chamber, G, provided with a tiathorizontal top, 1;, having a closed center part with airescape holes around it, and having a wall provided with air-inlets m,and at its lower end an open neck, h, which is coupled with the'top opening of the said lower cone, as set forth.
