` RAILWAY WEIGHING SCALE. I
Patented Dec. 1s, 1887( @Ja/CMN N. PETERS, Pham-ummm, wasmngm. at:V
4o and track-rails are broken.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE ESTABROOK, OF PATERSON, NEV JERSEY.
RAILWAY WEIGHINGPSCALE.
SPECIFICATION formi-ng part. of Letters Patent. No. 374,665. dated December 13, 1887.
Application filed May 2U, 1887. Serial No. 238,810. (No model.)
5 invented anew and useful Improvement in Railway-Scales, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The anvil-blocks on the scale-platform for 1o supporting the free end of the bridge-rails and the springs for supporting the bridge-rails in their elevated position, hitherto employed when connecting the permanent railway-track rails with those of the railway-scale track, are
found to be objectionable on account of the clattering noise and excessive wear of the engaging parts. The car while passing over the bridge-rail forces the free ends of the same into contact with the anvil-blocks, to be raised zo by the spring as soon as relieved from the pressure of the wheel that has passed, to be again depressed by each succeeding car-wheel as the train passes.
The object of my present invention is to so connect the permanent railway-track with the railwayseale track as to secure the advantages of the anvil-blocks'and springs without their objectionable features.
With these ends in view my invention con- 3o sists in a railway-scale platform having rail chairs or seats therein to receive and support the free end of the bridge-rails in a position always even with the railwayscale track.
My invention further consists in certain fea- 3 5 tures of construction and combination of parts,
as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure l of the drawings is a plan view of my invention, in which figure the platform Fig. 2 shows a portion of one side of the same in elevation.
A represents a railway'scale of any suitable construction, in the platform b of which scale I arrange and secure rail seats or chairs D. The chairs or seats D, which are constructed of'plates of wrought-iron, are provided with upward-projecting lugs F F. The lugs or guides F F are riveted in the said wroughtiron plates and form a part of the chairs or seats D, and serve to guide the free end of the bridge-rail B in its vertical movement and hold the same in exact position with the platform-track rail C and prevent lateral displace` ment of said bridge-rail B and scale-track rail O. The chairs or seats D, which are bolted to the platform b, are arranged to be even with the platform of the scales, so as to offer no obstruction and prevent dirt accumulating thereon.
rails B a 'e adapted to rest on the rail seat or chair D, ctween the lugs F ofthe same, and even with the rail C on the scale-platform b, as shown in Fig. 2.
By this my invention cars pass smoothly from the permanent track A over the bridgerail B upon the scale-track O, causing no jar in passing, and pass without injury to the scale mechanism, while the scale-platform will yield by depression to the several cars that pass, in accordance with their weight.
Having described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent in a railwayscale The combination, with a depressible platform having a track-rail, ofa rail seat or chair having guides adapted to hold in position the end of the platform-track rail and guide the free end of the bridge-rail to its seat in said chair and even with the track-rail therein, and bridged-ail B, adapted to seat in theI said chair, as and for the purpose herein set forth.
HORACE ESTABROOK.
