It is previously known from Swiss Pat. 449 401 to manufacture cartons of cardboard, and a machine for manufacturing glued cartons is known from Swiss Pat. 461 247.
In the prior-art apparatuses, machines and processes for making cartons it has proved difficult to provide an apparatus that permits the manufacture of cartons in a single operation.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus by which the manufacture of the carton bottom and lid portions can be realized in one simple operation.
The apparatus suggested by the present invention is characterized in that the upper die is in two parts the box-shaped lower part constituting the plunger and the upper part including a folding mechanism, and that guides are provided which on continued lowering of the plunger make the folding means operative. This arrangement makes it possible not only to perform the manufacture in one simple operation but also to withdraw the plunger only after the glue flaps have been folded over, so that the glue will not be scraped off the glue flaps, which of course is a considerable advantage.
The invention will be described more in detail hereinbelow with reference to the accompanying drawings in thereof in other positions, that is, with the plunger in the lowermost position;
FIG. 6 is a diagrammatic view of the bottom portion of a carton with some of the original positions.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the comer portion of a lower die in which shafts 2 and 3 are mounted, the shafts 2 extending longitudinally of the apparatus and serving to erect the long sides of the carton, while the shafts 3 extend transversely of the apparatus and serve to erect the short sides of the carton.
4 denotes a holder for an upper die which is secured to a vertically movable transverse member of the machine employed for the manufacture of the cartons.
5 denotes a box-shaped part of the upper die with bearings 18 for a member 16, 17 which serves to fold over carton end flaps.
6 denotes a box-shaped lower 'part of the upper die for shaping the carton 23. Two guides 7 for pressure springs 8 are screwed fast to the bottom of the part 6.
- 9 denotes a holder for a ball bearing 10 with which the part 17 is in guiding engagement. 11 denotes protruding portions against which the part 6 rests during folding over of the glue flaps. The portions 11 are secured to arms 12 which are guided by means of a joint 13 which is operated by a cam on the main shaft of the machine.
14 denotes rubber-coated rolls for pressing the long sides of the carton inwards, and 15 denotes a bearing for the rolls. l9 denotes a bearing for the shaft 18.

The function of the apparatus is as follows:
The carton blank is supplied on guide rails from a magazine and introduced through the machine into the carton erecting apparatus. During the advance the carton bla'nk travels past a pair of glue applicators, which apply two strands of glue of a given thickness and length to the glue flaps of the carton blank.
After the carton blank has been moved in position in the apparatus, the upper die is moved downwards and the box-shaped lower part 6 thereof urges the blank through the lower die of the erecting apparatus, which is formed by four corner pieces 1, the two longitudinally extending shafts 2 and the two transversely extending shafts 3. The sides of the carton blank are erected along these shafts. The corner pieces serve as fastenings for the shafts 2, 3 and also as guides for the side plates in accurate positions.
The box-shaped lower part 6 is urged against the abutments 11. The abutments then occupy the inserted position.
Meanwhile the box-shaped upper part 5 continues its downward movement. The length of this movement is determined by the stroke length set for the crank of the main. shaft.
The guides 7 which are screwed fast to the bottom of the box-shaped lower part 6 also serve to guide the boxshaped upper part 5-. Sleeves 20 are mounted in the bottom of the part 5 and run on the guides 7.
The upper die is fastened by means of the holder 4 to a transverse member which is moved up and down by the crank. This transverse member slides in vertical guides.
' At the continued lowering of the box-shaped upper part 5 of the upper die the lever arm 17 strikes the ball bearing 10, whereby the folding means 16 which is'conparts withdrawn from their nected' to the lever arm 17 over the shaft 19 engages the outer side of the glue flap of the blank and at the continued inward and downward swinging movement of the folding means it will fold the glue flap inwardly against the inner face of the carton. In the lowermost position the folding means urges the glue flaps and the carton under spring pressure against the abutment plate 24 which is located behind them.
Upon continued rotation of the main shaft the cams raise the joints 13 whereby the abutments 11 which are secured to the swing arms 12 will swing back and release the box-shaped lower part 6. Under the action of the compressed pressure springs 8 the box-shaped lower part 6 will move downwards and stop against the rubber shock absorbers 21. The glued and erected carton will simultaneously be released from the plunger and placed upon a conveyor belt.
In the corner pieces 1 rubber rolls 14 are mounted along the lower part of the apparatus on both sides thereof. When the box-shaped .lower part 6 is in position on the abutrnents 11 the rolls 14 exert pressure against the crease lines on the long sides of the carton. This will eliminate the tendency of the erected carton to buckle outwardly with its long sides due to tensions in the carton material. The pressure is adjustable.
After the carton has been discharged from the apparatus the upper die returns into upper position and the folding means 16 swings back into initial position, whereafter the upper die is ready to perform a new operation. Y a
ton forming area and cooperating with the downward movement of said upper die, said folding means having folding elements which swing from the outer side of said carton and into said carton with inward folding of a flap on said carton simultaneously.
2. The apparatus of claim 1 including means on said upper die for shaping the carton.
Claims (2)
1. An apparatus for erecting carton blanks to a carton comprising a frame, a lower die means mounted on said frame for erecting the sides of the carton, an upper die means movably mounted on said frame so as to move downward into said lower die means, a pair of cam operated folding means located outside of the carton forming area and cooperating with the downward movement of said upper die, said folding means having folding elements which swing from the outer side of said carton and into said carton with inward folding of a flap on said carton simultaneously.
2. The apparatus of claim 1 including means on said upper die for shaping the carton.
