COAT AND HAT HOOK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,014, dated November 29, 1887. Application filed February 1, 1886. Serial No. 180,449. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, FREDERICK TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States,residin g at Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Coat and Hat Hooks, of which the following is a specification.

- My invention relates to coat and hat hooks, the principal object of my improvementbeing to prevent a lateral swinging of the hook upon its support.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an isometric view of the best form of my invention, and Fig. 2 an isometric view of a modified formthereof.

D, Fig. 1, represents the hook as a whole. Said hook is formed of wire and has a vertical back, b, on the upper end of which is formed a backwardly extending horizontal attaching-point, 8, preferably screw-threaded. The lower end of the back is bent forward in the same plane with the attaching-point to form a coat-hook, O, and the wire is then bent downward over said coat-hook and backward to said back b, and then upward and forward to the hat-hook H,the wire between said coat: hook and said hat'hook forming a brace, B, in the usual manner. From the hat-hook H the wire is bent backward horizontally to form an arm, A, which isbent around the back b, as shown, forming an eye, 6. From the eye 6 the wire is bent laterally and upward,and then laterally in the other direction back of said back b,at the top of said back, and then down ward and inward toward said back, at which place the wire ends, the lateral extension or rest F being arranged equally on both sides of the back Z) and having the effect of preventing the hook D from swinging sidewise around the axis of the back I). The back b is bent forward at the point where the eye 6 of the horizontal arm A surrounds it, and also at the top of the rest F, to allow the horizontal part of the wire which forms the rest F to lie in the same plane with the back b.

The form shown in Fig. 2 differs from that shown in Fig. 1 in having the back b below the horizontal arm A and between said arm and the rear part of the hook O bent laterally in both directions to form a rest, F, auxiliaryto another rest, F ,thelatterbeingformed, like the rest F in Fig. 1, by a continuation of the wire from the eye 0, but being bent across the back 12 of the hook below said eye e, instead of above the same, as shown in Fig. 2.

Said last-named form or modification differs from the form shown in Fig. 1, also,in having the upper end of the back I) bentdownward against the said sides of said back b to form an attaching-eye, 8, through which a woodscrew may be driven in the usual manner into the cleat or wall to which said hook is to be affixed. Below the attachingeye s the end of the wire which forms the back is bent back: ward horizontally, and is preferably screwthreaded, to form an attaching-point,as above described. is adapted to make the hook very stiff to resist any force applied laterally.

I claim as my invention 1. A wire hat and coat hook having a hathook, a coat-hook united by a brace, a horizontal arm, a vertical back connected by said horizontal arm to said hat-hook, and a laterally-projecting rest arranged on both sides of The above-described construction said back, and an attaching-point, as and for the purpose specified.

2. A wire hat and coat hook having a hat hook, a'coat-hook, a brace uniting said hathook and said coat-hook, a vertical back, a horizontal arm connecting said vertical back and said hat-hook, and a rest projecting laterally on both sides of said back and adapted to furnish a broad bearing for said hook, and an attaching-eye and point, as and for the purpose specified.
