STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. BURR, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
SHUTTERQFASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,207, dated May 17, 1887.
Application filed July 29, 1886. SerialNo. 209,386. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. BURR, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shutter-Fasteners, of which I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact specification, reference being had to the accom' panying drawings, forming a part thereof.
This invention is in the nature of an improvement in the shutter-fastener heretofore patented by me May 19, 1885, in a patent numbered 318,414; and the invention consists of the guard and springs constructed and combined in the manner hereinafter particularly described, shown, and claimed.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figurel is a front elevation of my improvement; Fig. 2, a section of same taken in the linear 00, Fig. l; and Fig. .3, a vertical section in the line 3 y, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
As is stated above, this invention is simply an improvement on the shutter-fastener patented by me May 19, 1885. In the device so patented the pivoted hasp or catch A of the shutter B passed through the outside'of the shutter and terminated in a plate, 0, against which a stream from the nozzle of a hosepipe could be directed with force enough to disengage the catch from its retainingbar D, and so, in case of fire, afford ready means for opening the iron shutters of a warehouse and enable the firemen to play through the window to the fire within the building; but it was found in practice that while the stream from a hose-pipe would readily open theshutters, as stated, so also would a stick or a welldirected stone in the hands of designing persons; and it is to remedy this defect that I now fix to the shutter B, on its outer surface and immediately below the plate 0 of the catch A, a guard, E, of any convenient shape, but necessarily perforated, or of gridiron form, as is shown in Fig. 2, so that, although a guard is interposed between the plate 0 and the impact of a stone or stick, still the stream from the hose can readily pass through the interstices in the guard and impinge against the plate, and so open the catch with the same facility as if the guard were not present. Now, the
disengagement of the catch in the manner described is of course essential to the opening of the iron shutters, but the shutters will not because of this disengagement fly open to admit the stream from the engine unless some means be provided for that purpose.
111 my patent before referred to I described springs fixedto the lower part of the windowframe; but a still better means for opening the shutters consists in providing each shutter at or near its top with a bracket, F, to which, in
any desirable manner, is fixed one end of a 7 spring, a, the other end of the spring being secured to the wall of the building, so that the spring is in a state of tension or torsional strain when the shutters are closed and held by the catch A; but when the catch is disengaged this spring is free to exert its elastic force, and does exert it, in throwing the shutter open and holding it back against the wall, which could not be done by the springs described in my previous patent. These springs a, by their action in holding the shutters back against the wall of the building, render unnecessary the ordinary turn-buckle commonly used forthat purpose.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination, the following elements: a shutter, B, a pivoted catch, A, passing through the shutter and provided at its outer endwith a plate, 0, a retainingbar, I), or similar device, to engage with said catch, and a perforated guard, E, fixed to the shutter B below and as a protection for the plate 0, as and for the purpose described;
. JOHN A. BURR.
In presence of-- WM. P. BURR, Burns P. LIVERMORE.
