SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,543, dated May l0, 1887. Application tiled December 16, 188. Serial No. 22L754. (No modeLl .To all whom it may concern,.-
l citizen ofthe United States, residing at Grove Lake, in the county of Pope and State of Minnesota, have invented certainl new and useful Improvements in Ghurns; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to churns, and has for its object to improve the general construction of such devices, to produce asimple mechanism for adjusting the body ofthe churn vertically, to devise a convenient and ready means for regulating the throw ofthe dasher, and, in short, to improve the construction of the churn- 'body, whereby the same is rendered durable and strong.
The improvement consists in the novel features presently to be described and claimed,and shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a churn embodying my improvements; Fig. 2, a side view; Fig. 3, a sectional View on the line a' a: of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a sectional view, on the liney y of Fig. l, of the churn body and cover; Fig. 5, a detail of the dasher; Fig. 6,a detail view of the mechanism for adjusting the churn-supporting platform;and Fig.7 is a detail perspective view of the devices for adjustably connecting the churn-dasher with the driving-shaft.
` The frame of the machine comprises the four corner-posts A, united at their lower ends by the sills A2 A4, and held together at their upper ends by the cross-bars 'A' and A3. It is supported by the rollers A5 and the caster A6, so the device can be moved fromv place to place, as may be desired.
rIhe adjustable platform B has its four corners cut away to receive the four corner-posts of the frame, and has standards b,four in number, formed in pairs, which are located opposite each other, each pair working between two adjacent corner-posts, as shown. The rollers b', located near the upper ends of the standards, work upon ways a, fastened to the inner sides of the corner-posts. By this means the platform is Vguided in its vertical movement, and is prevented from binding between the posts of the frame. The platform is adjustedby the feedscrew C, which is interposed between the central cross-bar, A7, uniting the sills Azand the bottom of the platform. The nut D is mounted upon said screw and rests upon the cross-bar Ato which it is held by the plates d, secured thereto and having their ends cut away and fitting in a groove near the lower end of the nut, which nut has a worm-gear formed on the portion above the plates. The shaft D is journaled in suitable bearings,a, secured to the sills A4, and has the worm-thread d2, which meshes with the wormnut. The outer end of said shaft D extends beyond the sill A4, and is provided with the crank D, by which said shaft is rotated in its bearings. The upper end of the feed-screw C islxedly connected with the platform,so as not to have any movement about its axis. It is preferably connected by the plates c, having their approximate ends fitted in a groove formed in the head of the feed-screw,asshown.
The driving-shaft is composed of two parts, E and E', journaled in bearings secured to the upper cross-bars A3. The parts are in alignment and have their proximate ends separated and provided with transverse openings. through which arms f of the crank F pass and unite said ends. The crank is adjustable to and from the axial line about which the shafts E and E of the driving-shaft rotate in order to vary the throw of the dasher according to the work to be performed. The crank, when adj usted,
is held in position by the set-screws f', passingthrough the ends ofthe shafts E and Eand bearing upon the armsf of the crank in amanner readily understood. The shaft E is extended beyond the cross-bar A3, and is provided with the fly-wheel e, and the shaft E is correspondingly projected beyond the oppositev side and has the pinion e keyed thereto, which pinion meshes with the gear-wheel e4, mounted upon the shaft e3, journaled in a bracket, e4, and a cross-bar, e5. The end of the shaft e3 projects beyond the bracket e4, and has the crank e secured thereto. The dasher-shaft G is connected with the crank by the links Gr,having its upper endprovided with therodsg,which pass through yokes,g g', between which the two-part boxing gr2 is clamped by the nuts g3, screwed upon the IOO outer ends of said rods g. The lower end ofthe dasher-shaft is provided with a cross-head, G,
p having end pieces, G3, between the outer ends of which the wings G4 are journaled. Said wings are journaled near the upperouter corners of the end-pieces and incline downward toward the crossbar G", and are limited in their movement by the stops g".
The churn-body H, which is preferably rectangular in cross-section, has the bottom h n extended beyond the sides. Metallic bands H encircle a portion of the body near its top and hottonnandare'L-shaped incrosssection. One portion of the lower band rests upon the projecting ledge of the bottom, and the other portion rests against the sides of the body. The churn-body is placed upon the platfrom and is closed by a cover composed of three parts-the middle part, H2, and thesides h', hinged thereto. The dasher-shaft passes through the middle part, H2.
The cover is secured to the body by hooks 71.2, passing through eyes r. That portion of the cover opposite the mouth of the churn is increased in thickness, so that when fitted in the mouth of the churn-body the cover will not slip laterally. The edges of the cover are reduced and protected by the metal binding H3. The churn-body is placed in an outer vessel, I, leaving a space between the sides of said vessel and the sides of the churn, into which a suitable medium is placed, to bring the cream to the required temperature for churning. In case the cream is too warm, ice or cold water is introduced into said space, and in case the cream be too cool, a warm liquid is employed and poured into said space.
In practice the cream to be churned is placed in the churn-body, which, in turn, is set upon the adjustable platform, the dashcr is placed in position therein, and the cover placed upon the churn-body and secured thereto by the hooks before mentioned. The churn being adjusted to the proper position upon the platform is clamped thereto by the brace J, having its ends extended between the standards Z) of the platform, and held down upon the churn-cover bythe setscrews j, passing through the bars B', uniting the ends of said standards b. rlhe brace J is centrally apertured to permit the passage of the dasher-shaft, about which it turns as an axle when its ends are carried to and from the set-screws j.
In order that there may be no lost motion, the platform is adj usted to such a height that the dasher, in its highest movement, will not leave the cream. To ascertain when such adjustment is had, one of the hinged parts h of the cover is opened. Everything being i n readiness, motion is imparted to the driving-shaft till the required operation is complete, when, by unloosening the set-screwsj and disengaging the end of the brace J, the churn, with its contents, may be removed.y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1S-
l. The combination of the frame comprising corner-posts provided with ways, the adjustable platform having standards, the rollers secured to said standards, the churnbody clamped to the platform, and the dasher and dasher-operatin g shaft supported by the frame, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the crank and the dasher-shaft, of the two-part boxing, the yokes and the rods secured at one end to the daShcrshaft and having their other portions passing through the yokes, and the nuts screwed upon the projecting ends of the rods, substantially as set forth.
3. The herein shown and described churn, composed of the combination of the following elements: the frame, the rolling supports, the ways a, the vertically-adjustable platform B, the standards I), the cross-bars B', uniting the upper ends of the standards, the Vrollers b', fitted to the ways andrnounted upon the standards, the churn-body placed upon the platform, the brace J, the set screws j, passed through the bars B and bearing upon the ends ofthe brace for clamping the churn to the platform, the adjustable dasher G, and the dasheropcrating mechanism, consisting of the twopart shaft E and E', the crank F, and the gears e c2, supported by the frame, substantially as set forth.
