Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SWINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,216, dated August 19, 1862.
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,WILLIAM J. HUOKETT, of the city of Marshall, in the-county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, haveinventeda new and useful Improvement in Swings; and I do hereby declare that the followingis afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specicatiomwhich gives a perspective representation of the swing in full operation.
The object ofthis iniprovementis to furnish children, invalids, or others who are fond of swinging with an easy Inode of starting a swing and preserving and regulating its vibrations without assistance from any one, the exertion necessary being no more than sufficient to constitute a healthful exercise; and the better to enable others to construct and use my invention I` will now proceed to describe it.
A A represent twostout wooden posts let deep in the ground and sufciently high to give the required arc of vibration, and B is a wooden girt framed in between the' said posts near the top.
A car, C, tted with one or more seats, is suspended by two iron or wooden hanging bars, D D, fastened to the sides of the car by means of hooks a a, attached to the upperends,
lfitted to eyebolts passing through the said girt B, orvby a rod 'passing through the posts and hanging bars, orin any other more cheap or convenient manner n ot involving great friction.
When it is desired to accomplish, in connection with the swinging action, some useful mechanical effect-such as working a pump, &c.-I then attach the hanging bars D D rigidly to a rocking shaft (not shown) with bearings in the posts and having one overhanging end, to which an arm (not seen) is fitted for communicating a reciprocating motion by the vibration of the car.
Pand P'laretwo pulley-blocks,o ne of which, P', is connected by a loop to the 'center of an from thence to and over pulley P downward to the hands of the swinger in the car G.
The mode of operation is as follows: The operator, seated in the car, as it hangs vertically in a state of rest, grasps the cord by its tassel and pulls it in a downward direction, which causes the car to make a partial vibration, by reason of the connection ofthe other end of the cord to pulley-block P,attached to the cross-bar E ofthe swinging frame, when the cord is slackened to allow the return vibration and then tightened andloosened alternately, in the manner of ringing'a large bell, unt-il full Vibrations are obtained, which can be continued. for Aany desired length of time with but little effort.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The application and use ofthe pulley-blocks P P2 and connecting-cord X, when arranged and connected relatively with each other and with the frame and swing, in the manner as and for the purposes specified.
