Description

1OO. COMPOSITIONS,
COATING OR PLASTIC.
if? v -5- UNITED f STATES filzmmm s PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL KUTZKAK AlS IDERNEST ALWIN OTTO, OF sari FRANCISCQ, 'OAL.
COMPOUND FOR WALL DECORATIONS AND SIGNS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,162, dated May 3,1887.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EMIL KUTZKAN and ERNEST ALWIN O'r'ro, residents of the city and county of San Francisco, State of Califor- 5 nia, have invented a new and useful Composition for Decorations in Belief; and we hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
' exact description of the same, and of the manner in which we prepare, apply, and use our said composition.
lhe object of onrinvention is to manufacture artistic decorations of various kinds, such as ornamental walls, panels, ceilings, cornices, bric-a-brac, and advertising signs and devices.
The product of our composition is as hard as marble, and will receive and retain a high polish, and it may be painted or otherwise ornamented with any metallic or mineral pigment, or gilded or bronzed with facility; and, as it is both hard'and tough, it may be attached to any surface, rough or smooth, with glue or any viscous and tenacious substance; or it may be screwed, nailed, or Otherwise fastened to a wall or a ceiling; or it may be applied to the uuplastered beams or studding of a building, which we claim as a great advantage in our composition.
In order to produce our composition, we employ the following ingredients in about the proportions specified, as follows: Plaster-Ofaris nincty-two (92) per cent.- borax two i per cent-silicate of otash and soda three (3) per cent., an ene ran tur en me three (3) per cent. To these ingredients we add in 5 certain articles of our manufacture-such as thin plates of large surface-a certain proportion of some fibrous pulp-as, for example,
ute-in order 0 give greater tenacity to the composition. When the composition is so pre- 4o pared, the mold is nearly filled with it; but
the outer layer, which is to be exposed and 1 polished and ornamented, is composed only of Application filed February 17,1886. Renewed April 1, 1387. Serial Nn.233,3-l3. (No specimens.)
the four ingredients we have specified and the water required to render the mass a consistent pulp, the fiber being omitted in the outer layer. 4 5
In addition to the use of fiber in ourcomposition for the purpose specified, we fortify large plates or piecesv by inlays of thin and flexible strips of wood in this manner: A layer of the composition is put into the mold, and 'then the strips of wood are placed along the sides and ends and in the middle, care being taken toleave space between the strips and the mold for the composition to enter and completely inclose the strips.
If any of the manufactures of our composition, of whatsoever kind or form of ornamentation, should be cracked or fractured from any cause, the seams or crevices can be readily filled with the composition having the fiber omitted, and the repaired surface painted or ornamented, as the work demands.
We claim for our composition for decorations in relief that it affords a cheap, durable, and beautiful material for many purposes ofoutside and inside display and ornamentations.
Having thus fully described our invention, whatv we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A composition for manufacturing decorations in relief, consisting of plaster-ofparis, ninety-two (92) per cent; bprax, two (2) per cent; silicate of p cla sh and so da, three (3) per cent. Venetian turpentine, three (3) per cent. to which is added, for the purpose and in the manner described, a certain proportion of fibrous pulp and inlays of thin strips of wood,- as shown, substantially as described, and for the-purpose set forth.
