BROOM.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters l atent No. 362,056, dated May 3, 1887.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID BLooK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brooms, of which the following is a specification.

Theobject of my invention is to provide an improvement in brooms which will adapt them also for use as a sprinkler without necessitating any separate watercan or other implement for the purpose, thus making the article exceedingly convenient for sprinkling and sweeping floors, washing windows, scrubbing, &c.; also usable for watering plants.

The invention consists in a broom provided with a water-receptacle, and in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the various parts of the same, as will be hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure represents a side elevation of a broom constructed according to my present invention, the handle being shown in vertical central section.

The whisk A of the broom is the same as usual; but the handle B is hollow, preferably made of a tube of sheet metal, the lower end of which, above the whisk A, has a closed bottom, 1). Above the bottom b one side of the tube toward one of the broad fiat sides of the whisk is provided with a series of perforations to form a strainer, 0. Above the strainer the tube B has apartition, O, centrally through which is an aperture closed by a downwardly-. opening conical or other valve, a, which is fastened upon the lower end of a valverod, D, which latter projects through the upper end of the tubular handle B, and is provided with a knob or cross-piece, d, by which the valve is operated. The valve-rod Dis fitted to slide in holes through cross-pieces or bridges E e, a spiral spring, F, surrounding the valve-rod D'and interposed between the bridge e and the cross-pin f in the rod, serving, by the force of its elasticity, to normally keep the rod raised and the valve a tightly closed to its seat.

The upper end of the tubular handle B is funnel-shaped or flaring at G, as shown in the drawing, and provided also with an interior funnel, H, the hole in the apex of which closely surrounds the valve-rod D, the outer end of the tube between the funnels G and H being closed air-tight by an annular plate, 9.

The funnel H has a perforation through one side thereof, and at the opposite side and at a lower elevation another perforation, cf, the ob ject of the lower perforation being to allow the water, when poured into the inner funnel, H, to enter the receptacle B without being hindered by compressed air, the air escaping at the same time through the opposite airhole, h.

The object of the inner funnel, H, is to prevent the water from accidentallyflowiug out from the upper end of the tube if the broom is dropped or temporarily laid down, the size of the holes h i not being so largeas to allow any appreciable amount of the water to run out against the outside atmospheric pressure until the broom is again raised, 7

The sprinkling required to lay the dust while sweeping is accomplished by simply depressing the knob d of the valve-rod D,whieh allows the water from the receptacle B to flow out from the strainer c in the direction as indicated by the arrow.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. In a broom, the combination, with the whisk A, of the tubular handle B, provided with the partition 0, and the sprinkler c in the side below the said partition, the rod D, provided with a valve, a, and asp'ring, F, normally keeping the said valve closed, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a broom provided with a water-receptacle with sprinkler c and valve and rod a. D, the combination, with the outer flaring end of the tube B and with the said valve-rod D, of the inner funnel, H, having holes h i at different elevations, the apex of t-hesaid funnel surrounding the said valverod, substantially as specified.
