Abstract
A PAIR OF SWINGS ARRANGED IN TANDEN RELATION AND SPACED WITH RESPECT TO ONE ANOTHER ARE DISCLOSED AS BEING SUPPORTED INDIVIDUALLY FROM AN OVERHEAD SUPPORT BY MEANS OF FLEXIBLE CHAINS ETC. THIS SPACING BETWEEN THE TANDEM SWING SEATS IS SUCH THAT WHEN THEY ARE AT THEIR LOWERMOST POSITION RELATIVE TO A SINGLE SUPPORT POINT THEREABOVE THEY ARE OFF CENTER WITH RESPECT TO A VERTICAL LINE THROUGH THE COMMON SUPPORT POINT.

Patented Oct. 26, 1971 3,615,119 TANDEM SWINGS Roy L. Irwin, 2712 Ridge Ave., Warren, Ohio 44484 Filed Mar. 28, 1969, Ser. No. 811,517 Int. Cl. A63g 9/02 US. Cl. 297281 1 Claim ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE BACKGROUND OF THE iI-NVEN'IION (1) Field of the invention This invention relates to swings such as used by children and which are commonly formed of a single seat section and a pair of chains supporting the same from an overhead support such as a pipe stand or a tree limb etc.
(2) Description of the prior art Prior structures of this type have comprised individual swings which are simply seats with supporting chains or ropes suspending them from a suitable overhead support. Lawn swing sets are also known in which spaced apart centrally facing seat assemblies include an interconnecting floor like platform with suspension means so that the spaced apart seats and the floor like platform move in a common swinging motion. This invention provides seats preferably with arms and backs but without a floor like platform and positions them in tandem relation sufliciently spaced to permit two children to occupy the seats both facing in the same direction and both having their legs and feet free so that they can propel themselves relative to the ground over which the swing seats are suspended.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A tandem swing assembly comprises a pair of swing seats with or without arms and backs each of which is suspended by individual support means from a common overhead support. The seats are spaced one in front of the other in the tandem arrangement by a spacing device so as to provide sufiicient room for the child seated on the second swing to manipulate it in the usual manner.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the tandem swing with the flexible support means broken away at their uppermost portions.
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the spacing means seen between the tandem swing of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a side elevation of a modified set of tandem swings wherein seat portions are spaced with respect to one another by a spacer member.
FIG. 4 is a top plan view of a spacer member suitable for use with the tandem swings of FIG. 3.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT In the preferred embodiment of the tandem swings illustrated in FIG. 1 of the drawings, two seat type swings are disclosed, each comprising a seat portion 10, a back portion 11 and each having side arms 12. The arms 12 are attached to the sides of the seat portion 10 by vertical members 13 and the seat portions 10, the backs 11 and the arms 12. of each of the swings are so formed and assembled as to form a rigid structure.
A spacing member comprising a pair of parallel rods 14 and at least one transverse interconnecting member 15 is positioned between the swings with the ends of the rods 14 being loosely pivoted to the forward ends of the arms 12 of the rearward seat and to the rearward ends of the arms 12 of the forward seat. As disclosed V in FIG. 1 of the drawings the seat facing the left is the forward seat while the seat on the right in FIG. 1 is the rearward seat.
As illustrated in FIG. 1 the ends of the rods 14 are loosely pivoted to the fasteners 16 which are positioned through the arms 12. at each of the ends thereof for the primary purpose of providing means for attaching chains 17 which extend upwardly in inverted V shapes, a small distance above the arms 12 and then extend upwardly individually to a point of suspension not shown above the swings.
In use, children sit in the seats and will be observed that the spacing member formed of the parallel rods 14 enables a child to sit naturally and swing normally in the rearward seat. Whether the children swing themselves or whether someone else pushes them, the resultant action of the tandem swings is unique as each of the two seats is always off center with respect to the support point thereabove.
In FIG. 2 of the drawings, the spacing member formed of the rods 14 and transverse spacing member 15 may be seen and the eyelets on the ends of the rods 14 are indicated by the numerals 18 and are formed on a horizontal plane. In FIG. 4 of the drawings a similar spacing member is formed of parallel rods 19 and a transverse member 20 with the eyelets on the ends of the rods 19 indicated by the numeral 21 and positioned on a vertical plane. This latter spacing member of FIG. 4 is seen in operation in FIG. 3 of the drawings wherein a pair of swing seats 22 are disclosed positioned in tandem relation by the spacing member of FIG. 4 and the same are supported by flexible chains 23 from a common overhead support point in the same manner as the swing seats arranged in tandem relation and hereinbefore described in connection with FIG. 1 of the drawings.
It will occur to those skilled in the art that modifications in both the construction and design of the seats 22 forming the swings of FIG. 3 or the seats as disclosed with backs and arms in FIG. 1 of the drawings can be made within the scope of the invention and that the spacing members can also be varied to include for example more than one transverse member if desired.
The above described tandem swing provides a novel and attractive swing for children operative in a manner difierent from swings heretofore known in the art.
Although but one embodiment of the present invention has been illustrated and described, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
I. A tandem swing set comprising a pair of seats arranged in spaced tandem relation and a pair of elongated members pivotally engaging the sides of said seats for maintaining said spaced tandem relation, at least one transverse member joining said elongated members inwardly of their ends and flexible means suspending said seats from an overhead support.
