CLAPBOARD-MARKING DEVICE.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known. that I, EDWIN M. BYRKIT, of Michigan City, county of La Porte, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Siding-Gages; and I do hereby declare that the following is ,a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts. i
My invention relates to the construction of devices to. be attached to the frame pf a resawing-machine for gaging siding, this operation being performed simultaneously with the cutting of the board into the beveled pieces which,
[ form the siding, and will be understood from the following description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents my device attached to one side of the saw-frame. Fig. 2 is an end view showing the gaging apparatus attached to both sides of the frame of the resawing-machine for operating on both sides of the board which is being sawed, the board and saw-frame being in section. Fig. 3 is a top view of the same.

The gaging apparatus consists of a boxing,

' having a little projection which passes over 5 the top of the frame, so as to give it a firm bearing thereon. This boxing admits the round upright arm a, which is adjustable therein within any desired length, and is fastened at any point by aset-screw, This arm 0 a is preferably enlarged at the outer end, and
is slotted to admit the arm a, which is adj ustable in such slot, and may be fastened at any point by a set-screw, 8, working in the top. The arm a is considerably thinner that its width, a fair proportion between the two dimensions being shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and is provided with a yoke at its outer end, the arms of which provide bearings for the gudgeons or axle of the toothed wheel 10. By
turning arm a the wheel 10 may be set so that its teeth will gage lighter or deeper into the board, and may be set for a board of any re quired thickness, and the arm a, being of flexible metal, will allow the wheel to pass over any obstruction without injury.
The device operates as follows: The board being put in place on the resawing-machine, one of the gages is set so as to operate on the lower edge of the board, as shown at the right hand in Fig. 2, and the other is adjustedto op- 6c erate at the upper end of the opposite side of the board, as shown at the left hand in the same figure. These adjustments are easily accomplished by means of the setscrews before mentioned, and as the board is sawed the toothed wheels revolve,accurately and plainly marking and gaging the board atthe required width of lap, usually about an inch, so that both operationsname1y, the resawing and the gagingare accomplished at the same time.
Heretofore the gaging of sidi'ng'has been done by hand or upon aseparate machine from the resawing-machine; but this requires more time and labor and makes the operation much more expensive than by the use of my device.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following, viz:
1. In a gaging-machine, a boxing bolted to the frame of the resawing-inachine, carrying an upright arm adjustable in said boxing by means of a set screw or its equivalent, the upright arm slotted to receive a horizontal arm which is adjustable therein, the latter carrying a toothed gaging-wheel, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a gagingmachine for siding, the boxing b, having an opening to admit the upright arm a, the set-screw s for clamping the arm in said boxing, the horizontal arm a, adj ustable in the slot formed in the upright arm, the set-screw s, for securing the same in place at any desired point, and thetoothed wheel 20, carried in hearings in such elastic arm, allcom- 5 bined substantially as described.
