Abstract

A keeper is attached to a door jamb in alignment with a retainer plate mounted on the door and a locking member engaged with the keeper and overlying the retainer plate in one position for bridging the juncture between the door and door jamb for securing the door in closed position. The locking member can also be slidably engaged with the inner edge of the retainer plate and is tethered to the keeper by a chain so that the chain will retain the door in closed position. A securing latch is movably mounted on the retainer plate and is movable into a position retaining the locking member engaged with the keeper and retainer plate with a pivotal stop member engaging the securing latch to retain it in operative relation to the locking member.

SECURITY ATTACHMENT FOR CHAIN TYPE DOOR LOCK BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION l. Field of the Invention The present invention generally relates to chain type door locks and more particularly a chain type door lock which is completely burglar proof with the device being openable only from the interior of the door.
2. Description of the Prior Art Chain type door locks of various types are old and well known including types in which the chain is provided with a lug that is in sliding interlocking engagement with a bracket on the door, a lug which is locked to the door with a key operated lock device. While the first type of chain type door lock is rather simple and rather inexpensive, it is not effective to protect occupants since the door can still be opened to a limited degree within the limits of the chain which enables the chain to be severed by the use of a suitable cutting device. The key operated lock device is substantially more expensive but still permits the door to open to a limited degree thus enabling the chain to be cut. US. Pat. No. 3,401,969 issued Sept. 17, 1968 provides a locking member which is slidably engaged with a keeper mounted on the door jamb and in bridging relation to the juncture between the door and door jamb thus blocking opening movement of the door. While the structure in this patent effectively locks the door closed, the locking member can be elevated and released from the keeper by slipping a relatively thin flexible member inwardly between the edge of the door and the door jamb and moving it upwardly thus lifting the locking member and releasing it from the keeper thus rendering the locking device ineffective.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention to provide a locking device including a locking member similar to that illustrated in U.S. Pat. No. 3,401,969 but incorporating structural features associated therewith which will positively retain the locking member in engagement with the keeper and prevent it from being lifted upwardly into disengaged position by the insertion of any type of implement between the door and door jamb.
Another object of the invention is to provide a locking device in which a retainer plate is mounted on the door in alignment with and adjacent to the keeper mounted on the door jamb so that the vertically sliding locking member will be engaged with a vertical guideway in the retainer plate thereby preventing pivoting movement of the locking member in relation to the keeper if the door is forced inwardly thereby providing a relatively rigid and secure locking device.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a locking device in accordance with the preceding objects in which the security latch is in the form of a horizontally sliding member that moves into overlying relation to the locking member with the security latch being engageable by a pivotal stop member which engages the latch and retains it in overlying relation to the locking member thereby retaining it in the vertical guideway on the retainer plate and sliding locked with the keeper on the door jamb.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a locking device that is constructed for mounting on either the right-hand edge or the left-hand edge of a swinging door with only a rearrangement of components being necessary for this purpose inasmuch as only the securing latch must be reversed.
Yet another important object of the invention is to provide alocking device which is quite simple in construction, easy to assemble, dependable and long-lasting, installed with very little modification of the door structure and effective for preventing unauthorized opening of the door from the exterior thereof.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now specifically to the drawings, the numeral 10 generally designates the locking device of the present invention associated with the free edge portion of a vertically disposed swinging door 12 which is mounted for swinging movement about a vertical edge thereof remote from the locking device. As illustrated, the door 12 is disposed adjacent to a door jamb 14 with the door 12 and the door jamb 14 being substantially conventional construction with the edge of the door 12 being slightly spaced from the door jamb 14 in the usual manner.
The locking device 10 generally includes a keeper 16 attached to the door jamb 14, a retainer plate 18 attached to the door 12, a locking member 20 connected with the keeper l6 and the retainer plate 18 in bridging relation to the juncture between the door 12 and door jamb 14. The retainer plate 18 includes a securing latch 22 mounted thereon and a pivotal stop member 24 associated therewith for retaining the latch 22 in overlying relation to the locking member for retaining it in locked position.
The keeper 16 includes a mounting plate 26 or cleat having apertures 28 therein for receiving suitable fasteners such as screw threaded fasteners for installing the mounting plate 26 in recessed relation to the surface of the door jamb 14. The outer edge of the mounting plate 26 is provided with an offset portion 30 in perpendicular relation to the mounting plate 26 and which is disposed in the usual recess or vertical notch 32 formed inthe door jamb 14 (FIG. 3). The outer edge of the offset portion 30 is provided with an outwardly extending angulated offset portion 34 which extends outwardly at a suitable angle to a relatively narrow offset portion 36 which is parallel to but spaced from the offset portion 30 with the portion 36 overlying the surface of the door jamb 14 as illustrated in FIG. 3. The outer edge of the offset portion 36 is provided with a projecting lug 38 in the form of a plate having converging surfaces 40 to form an anchor for one end of atethering chain 42 which is engaged with and secured in an opening 44 in the lug 38. The chain 42 is a conventional link chain with one end link secured to and extending through the opening 44. The other end of the link chain 42 is attached to an opening 46 in a similar mounting lug 48 on the locking member 20. The lug 48 is perpendicular with a vertical plate 50 which has two vertical slots 52 and 54 therein which are equally spaced from each other and equally spaced from the side edges of the plate 50 as illustrated in FIG. 4. The slots 52 are therewith substantially equal to the thickness of the outer end portion of the mounting plate 26 for sliding engagement thereover and the width of the portion of the plate50 outwardly of the slots 52 and 54 is substantially equal to the width of the offset portion 30 so that when the slot 52 or the slot 54 is engaged over the mounting plate 26, the corresponding portion of the plate 50 outwardly of the slot will be received behind and engaged with the offset portion 30.
The retainer plate 18 includes a mounting plate or base 56 which may be of square configuration and provided with symmetrical screw receiving mounting holes 58 therein. Overlying the mounting plate 56 is a retaining plate 60 of rectangular configuration having similarly positioned screw receiving holes 62 for mounting on the mounting plate 56. The plate 60 includes an outwardly offset portion 64 which provides a horizontal receiver or socket for sliding reception of the locking member so that when the free edge of the locking member 20 is inserted inwardly under the offset portion 64, the lug 48 will engage with the edge of the offset portion 64 remote from the keeper 16 thereby serving as a chain lock for the door which will secure the door closed but still permit it to open a limited degree.
Spaced upwardly from the offset portion 64 is another offset portion 66 which forms a horizontal guideway for slidably guiding and receiving the securing latch 22 which is in the form of an elongated strap member 68 having out-turned ends 70 and 72 and a longitudinally elongated slot 74 formed centrally therein for receiving a fastener 76 such as a rivet or the like which extends through an aperture 78 in the offset portion 66. Thus, when the securing latch is assembled with the plate 60, it can slid horizontally within the limits of the slot 74 and the offset ends 70 and 72 which are received in notches 80 in opposite edges of the offset portion 66.
The stop pivotal member 24 is in the form of a relatively short strap member or bar 82 having a rounded end 84 and an aperture 86 which also receives the rivet 76 thus pivotally mounting the stop member for movement about the axis of the fastener 76 from a position in engagement with the inner surface of the offset end portion 70 or 72 of the latch member 68 to a vertical position which enables the latch member 68 to reciprocate between an operative and an inoperative position.
Mounted rigidly between the offset portions 64 and 66 is a retaining bar 88 having apertures 90 therein for receiving fastener screws 92 with the retainer bar 88 being longer than the plate 60 thus projecting from each edge thereof and cooperating with the corresponding portions of the mounting plate 56 to provide a vertical guideway for the edge of the locking member 20 remote from the keeper 16 which will prevent the locking member 20 from pivoting inwardly about an axis generally defined by the contact between the slot 52 and the offset portion 30 of the keeper 16. The retainer bar 88 may be of heavier gauge metal than the plate 60, mounting plate 56 and the other components to prevent bending thereof.
When the door is closed, the lock member 20 is inserted into engagement with the keeper 16 and at the same time is disposed vertically behind the end projecting of the retaining bar 88. The securing latch 22 is then moved horizontally so that the end overlies'the lug 48 on the locking member 20. The stop member 24 is then pivoted downwardly into engagement with the upper surface of the lug 48 and into engagement with the inner surface of the end portion 70 of the securing latch 22. This arrangement prevents the locking member 20 from being lifted upwardly and the orientation of the stop member is such that it is not accessible by virtue of it being above the lug 48 and inwardly of the out turned end 70 of the securing latch 22. Thus, the only way that the locking member can be removed is by manually pivoting the stop member 24 upwardly, sliding the securing latch 22 horizontally and then lifting the locking member upwardly.
When installing the device on the opposite side of the door, the components thereof may remain the same or if desired, the securing latch 22 may be provided with a larger handle on one end thereof and the securing latch can be reversed so that the handle forming end thereof will be larger than the end which engages the lug 48 on the locking member.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A safety chain locking device for a swingable door positioned in a door jamb comprising a keeper attached to the door jamb and having a chain anchoring lug, a retainer plate attached to the door generally in close proximal alignment with the keeper, manually controllable bodily applicable and removable locking member slidingly engaged with the keeper and overlying the retainer plate in bridging relation to the juncture between the door and door jamb, and latch means carried by said retainer plate and movable into tamperproofing and blocking relation to the locking member to retain it in locking as well as jimmy-resisting position.
2. The structure as defined in claim 1 wherein said latch means includes a latch member slidably mounted on the retainer plate in a plane above but proximal to said locking member, said locking member being vertically engaged with the keeper with the latch member sliding into overlying retentive engagement with the locking member thereby safely retaining it in latched relation to the keeper and in overlying tamper-proofing relation to a portion of the retainer plate.
3. A locking device for a swingable door positioned in a door jamb comprising a keeper attached to the door jamb, a retainer plate attached to the door generally in alignment with the keeper, a locking member slidingly engaged with the keeper and overlying the retainer plate in bridging relation to the juncture between the door and door jamb, and latch means movable into locking relation to the locking member to retain it in locking position, said latch means including a latch member slidably mounted on the retainer plate, said locking member being vertically engaged with the keeper with the latch member sliding into overlying relation to the locking member thereby retaining it in latched relation to the keeper and in overlying relation to a portion of the retainer plate, said retainer plate including a rigid bar mounted thereon in a manner to form a vertical guideway for slidably receiving a portion of the locking member when disposed in locking position and serving to stabilize and to prevent undesirable pivoting of the locking member in the event the door is forced inwardly.
4. The structure as defined in claim 3 together with stop means on said retaining plate for retaining the sliding latch member in locked position and overlying relation to the locking member.
5. The structure as defined in claim 4 wherein said stop means is in the form of a pivotal lug mounted on the retainer plate, said latch member including an outturned end portion engageable by said lug for retaining the latch member in overlying relation to the locking member.
6. The structure as defined in claim 5 wherein said locking member is tethered to said keeper by a flexible member, said retaining plate including a horizontal guideway defining a socket for receiving the locking member when not engaged with the keeper for use as a chain type door lock, said keeper including means for storing said locking member.
7. A safety chain controlling and safeguarding device for use in conjunction with a hinged door and a complemental encompassing door jamb comprising: a rigid keeper embodying a mounting plate fixedly attachable to a surface of said door jamb and having a lug joined thereto by an angulated offset portion, a safety chain having one end anchored on said lug, an orienting retainer plate fixedly mounted on said door in close proximal alignment with said keeper, a locking member releasably engaged with a portion of said mounting plate and having a plate portion superimposed upon and overlying said retainer plate in one position and bridging the usual juncture between adjacent vertical surfaces of the door and door jamb, respectively, and blocking inward opening movement of said door, said locking member having an inwardly projecting lug on which a coacting end of said safety chain is anchored and so that the chain functions to retain said door in its closed position, a securing latch slidingly mounted atop said retainer plate and manually shiftable into a predetermined position retaining said locking member in tamper-resisting and blocking relation with said keeper and retainer plate. j
. The safety chain controlling and locking device defined in and according to claim 7, and, in combination, a stop member pivotally mounted on said securing latch in a manner to hold it in cooperative relation to said locking member.

Claims (8)

1. A safety chain locking device for a swingable door positioned in a door jamb comprising a keeper attached to the door jamb and having a chain anchoring lug, a retainer plate attached to the door generally in close proximal alignment with the keeper, manually controllable bodily applicable and removable locking member slidingly engaged with the keeper and overlying the retainer plate in bridging relation to the juncture between the door and door jamb, and latch means carried by said retainer plate and movable into tamper-proofing and blocking relation to the locking member to retain it in locking as well as jimmyresisting position.
2. The structure as defined in claim 1 wherein said latch means includes a latch member slidably mounted on the retainer plate in a plane above but proximal to said locking member, said locking member being vertically engaged with the keeper with the latch member sliding into overlying retentive engagement with the locking member thereby safely retaining it in latched relation to the keeper and in overlying tamper-proofing relation to a portion of the retainer plate.

A locking device for a swingable door positioned in a door jamb comprising a keeper attached to the door jamb, a retainer plate attached to the door generally in alignment with the keeper, a locking member slidingly engaged with the keeper and overlying the retainer plate in bridging relation to the juncture between the door and door jamb, and latch means movable into locking relation to the locking member to retain it in locking position, said latch means including a latch member slidably mounted on the retainer plate, said locking member being vertically engaged with the keeper with the latch member sliding into overlying relation to the locking member thereby retaining it in latched relation to the keeper and in overlying relation to a portion of the retainer plate, said retainer plate including a rigid bar mounted thereon in a manner to form a vertical guideway for slidably receiving a portion of the locking member when disposed in locking position and serving to stabilize and to prevent undesirable pivoting of the locking member in the event the door is forced inwardly.
4. The structure as defined in claim 3 together with stop means on said retaining plate for retaining the sliding latch member in locked position and overlying relation to the locking member.
5. The structure as defined in claim 4 wherein said stop means is in the form of a pivotal lug mounted on the retainer plate, said latch member including an out-turned end portion engageable by said lug for retaining the latch member in overlying relation to the locking member.
6. The structure as defiNed in claim 5 wherein said locking member is tethered to said keeper by a flexible member, said retaining plate including a horizontal guideway defining a socket for receiving the locking member when not engaged with the keeper for use as a chain type door lock, said keeper including means for storing said locking member.
7. A safety chain controlling and safeguarding device for use in conjunction with a hinged door and a complemental encompassing door jamb comprising: a rigid keeper embodying a mounting plate fixedly attachable to a surface of said door jamb and having a lug joined thereto by an angulated offset portion, a safety chain having one end anchored on said lug, an orienting retainer plate fixedly mounted on said door in close proximal alignment with said keeper, a locking member releasably engaged with a portion of said mounting plate and having a plate portion superimposed upon and overlying said retainer plate in one position and bridging the usual juncture between adjacent vertical surfaces of the door and door jamb, respectively, and blocking inward opening movement of said door, said locking member having an inwardly projecting lug on which a coacting end of said safety chain is anchored and so that the chain functions to retain said door in its closed position, a securing latch slidingly mounted atop said retainer plate and manually shiftable into a predetermined position retaining said locking member in tamper-resisting and blocking relation with said keeper and retainer plate.
8. The safety chain controlling and locking device defined in and according to claim 7, and, in combination, a stop member pivotally mounted on said securing latch in a manner to hold it in cooperative relation to said locking member.
