UNITED STATES YPATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. CONN, OF ENGLEWOOD, ILLINOIS.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,775, dated September 13 1887. Application filed July 2, 1887. Serial No. 243.234. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. CQNN, a citi: zen of the United States, 'residing at Englewood, in the county of Oook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improve ment in Car-Oouplings, of which t-he following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to improvements in earcouplings; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter describedand claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, whiohfully illustrate my invention, Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section showing two draw-heads Fig. 2 is an end view of one ofthe draw-heads. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of one of the drawheads, showing the pin in its uncoupled position. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the coupling-pin, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View ot' the tumbler.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the draw-head secured to the under side ofthe car, at the end ot' the same, in the usual or any preferred manner. The upper side or top ot' the drawhead is cut away for the insertion of the tumbler, and thespace thus formed is covered and closed by a plate, B, having a slot, O, at its forward end, through which the coupling-pin works. A tumbler, D, is hung in the draw-head just in rear of the slot in which the coupling-pin works, and has the forwardly-extending front face, E, which projects normally in the path of the pin and has the shoulder or ridge F across its upper end. The frontend of the draw-head is closed, and is provided near its lower edge with a transverse slot, G, ot' sufficient width to admit the end of the coupling-link. The coupling-pin H is provided on its rear side with a transverseshoulder, I, which engages the shoulder F ofthe tumbler, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and thereby supports the pin'iu position to drop into engagement with the link. The upper end of the pin is connected by a link, J, to a crankshaft, K, journaled on the end of the car andiV extending to the side of the same, so thatthe device can be uncoupled without going between the ears.
L is a rod connected to the crank-shaftK and extending to the top of the car, so that the device may be operated from that poi'nt,if so desired.
The operation of my device will be readily understood. The link is secured in one drawhead and the draw-heads brought together. The free end of the link entering the uncoupled draw head will push the tumbler backward, thereby releasing the pin, which instantly drops into engagement with the link, as will be understood. To uncouple,it is necessary only to release the pin in one drawhead from thelink, when the link willbe drawn out ol" the draw-head and the tumbler will automatically swing forward into position to support the pin.
It will be observed that the device is very simple and is entirely automatic in its opera tion, thus dispensing with the necessity of the brakeman Agoing between the cars and endangering life and limb.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
` l l. The combination of the draw-head having its front end closed and provided with a transverse slot, G, in its lower portion, the tumbler pivotally supported in the draw-head, the link entering the draw-head through the slot G, and the pin supported by the tumbler and adapted to engage the link, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the draw-head having its interior cut away or recessed, the tunibler hung in said recessed portion, the plate B, covering the same, and having a slot, O, near its front end, and the pin passing through said slot O and supported bythetunibler, substantially as specitied.`
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOI-IN H. CONN.
Vitnesses:
