Abstract

A display carton for collapsible tubes is formed from a unitary cut and scored blank forming a carton sleeve. The sleeve is formed with a pair of shadow panels flanking the tube being displayed. The closure end of the tube is held in an aperture formed in a retainer tab folded into retaining position at one end of the carton sleeve. The flattened end of the collapsible tube is loaded into the carton sleeve and the opposite end of the sleeve is provided with a retainer tab having a slot therein to receive the flattened ends. The latter retainer tab is formed and folded into position after end loading of the tube to support the latter in said slot. The latter retainer tab is also provided with wing-like elements to assist in the support of the flattened end of the tube.

The sleeve is formed with a pair of shadow panels flanking the tube being displayed. The closure end of the tube is held in an aperture formed in a retainer tab folded into retaining position at one end of the carton sleeve. The flattened end of the collapsible tube is loaded into the carton sleeve and the opposite end of the sleeve is provided with a retainer tab having a slot therein to receive the flattened ends. The latter retainer tab is formed and folded into position after end loading of the tube to support the latter in said slot. The latter retainer tab is also provided with winglike elements to assist in the support of the flattened end of the tube.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention This invention relates to that class of packages for displaying merchandise packed in elongated containers such as collapsible tubes for toothpaste, cosmetics and the like.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention has for its principal purpose the provision of an end loaded package for a collapsible tube, the package being formed from a cut and scored paperboard blank or the like and formed into a sleeve having end closure panels adapted to hold the tube in position, where the collapsible tube is adapted to be end loaded to a position for support at one end thereof at an end closure supported in an aperture in a folded first end closure panel, and at the opposite end in a second end closure panel which is folded to receive and support the flattened end of the tube previously end loaded into the sleeve.

The improved display package according to the present invention is denoted by the reference numeral 10 and is particularly adapted to display an elongated container EC such as a collapsible tube or the like. Package 10 is formed from a cut and scored paperboard blank 10A consisting of a front panel 11, a back panel 12, and opposed side panels 13 and 14, all of the aforesaid panels being hingedly connected together along parallel score lines 16. A glue flap 17 is hingedly connected to side panel 13 along a score line 18, and is glued to rear of panel 12 at the edge thereof to form a carton sleeve as seen in FIG. 3.

A first end closure flap 22 is hingedly connected to rear panel 12 along a score line 23, and an opposite end second closure flap 19 is hingedly connected to rear panel 12 along a score line 21. Front panel 11 has an end closure flap 24 hingedly connected to one end thereof along a score line 26, and an opposite end clo sure flap 27 is hingedly connected to front panel 11 along a score line 28.

Dust flaps 29 are connected to each end of the side walls 13 and 14 are foldable with respect thereto along score lines 31.

Front panel 11 is formed with a display opening 30 therein, see FIG. 1, which is formed by a longitudinally extending out line 32 which together with score lines 36 and 37 spaced to each side thereof, and together with cut-out panels 38 and 39 define shadow panels 33 and 34. Upon folding down of panels 33 and 34 as seen in FIGS. 1 and 5, display opening 30 is thus provided for the elongated container EC.

Structure is provided for locating and holding in position an essentially cylindrical closure CC of the elongated container EC, and as seen in FIG. 2 particularly first end closure flap 22 has a first retaining tab extending 47 therefrom foldable with respect to end closure flap 22 along a fold 48. An essentially circular opening 49 is provided in the tab extension 47, and has a varying dimension to accommodate the cylindrical closure CC of the container EC.

Structure is provided for supporting a flattened end FE of the elongated container EC as seen in FIG. 5, and to this end the end second closure flap 19 has a second retainer tab 41 extending therefrom and hingedly connected thereto along a score line 42.

Second retainer tab 41 has a slotted opening 43 therein, and opposed wing elements 44 at the sides thereof are foldable with respect thereto along fold lines 46. The wing elements 44 stiffen retainer tab 41 for support of the container EC.

The steps of forming the package 10 and loading the same with the elongated container EC therein are best understood with respect to FIGS. 4 to 6 inclusive. In FIG. 4 the end closure flap 19 has retaining tab 41 folded with respect thereto along fold line 42, the wing elements 44 being bent upward as seen. At the same time, shadow panels 33 and 34 are folded inward along their respective score lines 36 and 37 into the carton sleeve seen. At this time also, end closure flap 22 has its retaining tab 47 folded with respect thereto, end closure flap 22 being folded into the position seen in FIG. 5 with opening 49 in position to receive the cylindrical closure of the elongated container EC.

When tab 47 is folded to the position seen in FIG. 5, the tube EC is end loaded into the carton body seen in FIG. 5 until the closure CC thereof is held in the opening 49 in retaining tab 47.

Retaining tab 41 which has been folded with respect to closure flap 19 to the position as seen in FIG. 4 is then folded about fold line 21, with the flattened end FE of container EC received in elongated slot 43. End closure flap 19 is then in the position seen in FIG. 6.

When the container EC is moved to the position seen in FIG. 6, the flattened end FE thereof is inserted into the elongated slot 43 of retainer tab 41, end closure flap 19 being then in the position seen in FIG. 7.

At the conclusion of the carton forming steps described, and the insertion of the container EC into package 10, dust flaps 29 extending from the side walls 13 and 14 are folded into position against closure flaps 19 and 22, whereupon outer closure flaps 24 and 27 are glued against the closure members already in position to provide a completed and loaded package 10 as seen in FIG. 1.

A display package for an elongated container such as a collapsible tube or the like, said elongated container having a flattened end and a closure at the opposite end thereof and being adapted to be end loaded into said package, said display package being formed from a unitary cut and scored paperboard blank comprising:

a. opposed front and rear panels and opposed side panels hingedly connected together to form a sleeve;

b. a display opening in said front panel having said elongated container extending therealong for viewing said container;

c. end closure flaps extending from the ends of said rear panel and foldable with respect thereto into position to form end closures for said sleeve;

(1. a first retaining tab extending from one of said end closure flaps and foldable with respect thereto:

i. said first retaining tab having the distal edge thereof bearing against the inner face of said rear panel;

ii. said first retaining tab having a locating aperture therein for receiving the closure of saidelongated container upon loading thereof into said sleeve from the opposite end thereof;

e. a second retaining tab extending from the other of said end closure flaps and foldable with respect thereto:

i. said second retaining tab having a elongated slot to receive and hold said flattened end of said collapsible tube, and being;

ii. movable with said other closure flap to tube holding position upon loading thereof into said sleeve from said opposite end of said sleeve;

iii. and said second retaining tab having wing elements at the side thereof foldable with respect thereto and bearing against the inner face of said rear panel and against the inner faces of said side panels to aid in the support of said tube.

2. A display package according to claim 1 wherein said display opening is defined by a pair of shadow panels foldable inward with respect to said front panel and having the ends thereof bearing against said first and second retaining tabs.

Claims (2)

1. A display package for an elongated container such as a collapsible tube or the like, said elongated container having a flattened end and a closure at the opposite end thereof and being adaPted to be end loaded into said package, said display package being formed from a unitary cut and scored paperboard blank comprising: a. opposed front and rear panels and opposed side panels hingedly connected together to form a sleeve; b. a display opening in said front panel having said elongated container extending therealong for viewing said container; c. end closure flaps extending from the ends of said rear panel and foldable with respect thereto into position to form end closures for said sleeve; d. a first retaining tab extending from one of said end closure flaps and foldable with respect thereto: i. said first retaining tab having the distal edge thereof bearing against the inner face of said rear panel; ii. said first retaining tab having a locating aperture therein for receiving the closure of said elongated container upon loading thereof into said sleeve from the opposite end thereof; e. a second retaining tab extending from the other of said end closure flaps and foldable with respect thereto: i. said second retaining tab having a elongated slot to receive and hold said flattened end of said collapsible tube, and being; ii. movable with said other closure flap to tube holding position upon loading thereof into said sleeve from said opposite end of said sleeve; iii. and said second retaining tab having wing elements at the side thereof foldable with respect thereto and bearing against the inner face of said rear panel and against the inner faces of said side panels to aid in the support of said tube.

2. A display package according to claim 1 wherein said display opening is defined by a pair of shadow panels foldable inward with respect to said front panel and having the ends thereof bearing against said first and second retaining tabs.
