[56] References Cited 4 I 5 Drawing UNITED STATES PATENTS 3,310,266 3/1967 Larkin et a1. ..248/ 154 GARBAGE CONTAINER AND ANCHORING BASE My invention is directed to solution of a problem which has long irritated home-owners. The problem referred to is the one of a sanitary storage of waste and garbage in the out-ofdoors. A common problem that arises with such storage is that when the container has garbage therein it is subject to being knocked over by animals in search of food and when the container is empty it is subject to strong winds blowing the container over and accomplishing much the same result. In accordance with my invention, I provide an integral arrangement with the garbage can for mounting same to a stabilized base member by means of an interlocking arrangement of headed stud members and arcuate slots. By such means, an attractive and simple apparatus is provided that overcomes the difi'rculties of the use of unanchored garbage cans.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 shows in elevational cross section one form of my invention wherein the garbage can has integral stud members attached thereto and a base member is provided for locking;
FIG. IA is a top elevational view of the base member of FIG. 1;
FIG. 2 is a common household garbage can that has been provided with an adapter unit for use with the base of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is an alternate adapter unit and base; and
FIG. 3A is a top elevational view of the adapter unit in accordance with FIG. 3.
Turning to FIG. 1, there is generally indicated a garbage container which may be of the conventional type having main container 11 with a projecting flange from the lower edge thereof 12 to form a recessed region 13 between the bottom I4 and the lower extremity of the can. Also provided is a lid member 15. Projecting downwardly from the bottom 14 are two stud members 16 having enlarged heads 17. These stud members may be ordinary bolts which are fastened to bottom 14 by means of nuts 18 or by welding.
Bolts 16 are adapted to cooperate with a platform member generally designated 19 which has a plate-like portion 20 with a raised center region 21 generally conforming in diameter to the shape of region 13 of container 10. That is, region 21 nests in region 13.
In region 21 there have been provided two arcuately shaped slot-like openings 22 having enlarged opening portions 23 on one end thereof. Openings 23 are large enough to accommodate head member 17 while the balance of the slot 22 is of diameter sufficient to accommodate the-shaft of stud 16 but which will not allow the head 17 to pass therethrough.
It can now readily be appreciated that in operation the can member 10 is lowered so as to position stud 16 in confronting relationship with holes 23. When the studs have passed through hole 23, the can is rotated until it is locked in position on member 19. The raised portion 21 permits the lower most projection of bolt 16 to be above the lower extremity of flange 12. This permits the garbage can to sit on any flat surface without teetering. Of course, it is not required that this type of construction be provided. I
Member 19 is secured firmly to the ground by some means such as stake members 24. This ensures that the entire arrangement will be free from the tendency to be tipped over, either due to animals or to the high winds.
As an alternative to the use of stakes 24, one may provide member 19 with a bottom corresponding to the ground level and fill it with some granular material such as sand to give it the additional weight necessary to hold it firmly to the ground while not being of excessive weight when it is desired to move this member about, such as during shipping or upon relocation of the site of the garbage can by the user.
In FIG. 2, an arrangement is shown for adapting the householders existing garbage can to accomplish substantially the same advantages as described above. In the figure, generally designates a common household garbage can which has flute-like members 31 running longitudinally down the walls thereof. An adapter member generally designated 32 is provided which has a generally flat, plate-like member having elevated sides 33 depending therefrom. This member may be formed in one continuous piece, with a complete rim forming member 33, or it may consist of a flat plate having ear-like members extending upward from the flat base.
Passing through the members 33 are screw members 34 which are adapted to engage the sides of the garbage can and rigidly and fixedly hold member 32 thereto. Other fastening means may also be utilized.
Depending downwardly from the base of member 32 are stud members 35 having enlarged heads 36. These stud members 35 operate in the same manner as that described with regard to FIG. 1 and stud member 16 to fasten the entire assembly of FIG. 2 to a base such as that illustrated in FIG. 1A. Openings 29 may be provided in the member 32 to provide for drainage of rainwater that may run into the adapter.
Turning to FIG. 3, there is illustrated yet another form of my invention. In the figure there is shown a conventional garbage can 30.
Attached to the base of the garbage can 30 is an adapter member generally designated 37 which includes a flat, platelike member having upwardly extending sidewalls 38 and screw members 39 for rigidly and fixedly mounting the assembly 37 to the base of a garbage can 30. The base adapter plate 37 has been provided with interior shoulders 40 for holding the garbage can 30 in elevation above the base of member 37. The reason for this will be readily appreciated from an examination of the figure.
In the base plate-like surface of member 37 there has been provided a pair of arcuate slot openings 41 having enlarged openings at one end thereof 42.
A platform member 43 is provided which has a generally flat surface with downward depending flange members of somewhat similar construction to member 19. However, with regard to the platform member 43, there is provided headed stud members 44 that are welded or otherwise fastened to the upper surface of member 43. These stud members are positioned to cooperate with slot members 41 in a manner analogous to the previously described arrangements of FIGS. 1 and 1A. The advantages of this latter construction is that the garbage can 30 and adapter member 37 can be placed upon the ground without the problems of balance that would be inherent in a structure such as that shown in FIG. 2. That is, member 37 has a flat base to set the garbage can on when not positioned on platform member 43.
I claim:
1. A garbage can adapter and anchoring apparatus comprismg:
a. an adapter member having a generally flat base and elevated rigid sidewall portions depending therefrom;
b. means for fixedly joining said sidewall portions to the lower portion of a garbage can;
c. a platform member;
