UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS FAULL PENNINGTON, OF GBEENSBOROUGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
FIRE-PLACE FRONT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,440, dated August 2,1887.
Application filed April 1, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS FAULL PEN- NINGTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greensborough, in the county of Greene and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Place Fronts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, .and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a fire place embodying my improvements. Fig. .2 is a horizontal section of the same upon line as x of Fig. I.
This invention relates to fire-place fronts of that class provided with folding doors hinged to jambs; and it consists in the peculiar com' binations and the novel construction and arrangen'lent and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A is the grate; B, the basket; 0 O, the jambs.
' E E are folding doors, each composed of a series of vertical leaves, a a, hinged together at their edges near the top and bottom, the leavesadjacentto thejambs beinghingedlhere to. The sections a of each of ,the doors E E are formed at both edges with hollow vertical curved edges 9, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
These curved edges constitute ornamental beads, forming or bounding the panels of the doors and jambs, and the inner edge forms a knuckIejoint uniting two sections of each door; and, furthermore, these curved edges 9 form a cover or protection for the hinges of each door when opened. When folded up and not in use, the doors occupy a space upon the outer face of the jambs C, where they will not only be entirely removed from the heat of the fire, but will be out of the way, and the hinges covered by the edges 9, as shown at the right of Fig. 2.
Although I have shown each of the doors as composed of two leaves, I do not desire to confine myself to such construction, as it is at once evident that the number of leaves employed may be varied without departing from my invention.
Serial No. 197,415. (No model.)
when it may be desired to prevent smoke from entering the apartment, either at the time of kindling the fire or during heavy winds, the upper set of doors may be closed and the lower doors opened. Should the draft be too great, the lower doors and the dampers b b in the same may be closed, and the upper doors being opened, cool air is admitted to the surface of the fire, and thus by diminishing the rarefaction of the air in the fire reduce and restrain the velocity of the draft and the intensity of the combustion.
The front of the upper rail of the basket is provided with a spring-catch of any suitable construction, which will serve to hold the doors securely in place when closed.
In order to prevent the possibility of the doors becoming warped or otherwise injured from overheating, I have provided holes F F in the upper doors, through which a sufficient amount of cool air is admitted to the surface of the fire to preventtoo high a degree of combustion.
I am aware that fireplaces have been provided with doors adapted to fold into recesses in thejambs. I am also aware that it is not new to provide a fire-place with verticallysliding fenders. I am also aware that it has been proposed to hinge an upper and lower set of doors, each set of the same height. I therefore do not claim such constructions.
Having thus described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination, with the jambs, of the doors E, formed oftwo leaves hinged together, one of said leaves being hinged to said jainbs, and the other provided with vertical curved edges 9, overlapping the hinge-joint between the, two doors when the latter are open, and overlapping both said hinge-joint and the hinge on which the inner door swings when the doors are folded within the recess in the and for the purposes specified.
presence of two witnesses.

In testimony whereof I affix my signatnrein-
