Abstract
A flat metal stamping about an inch and one-half long and 1 inch deep terminating at one end in an apertured laterally bent nose for receiving a key ring and at the other end in a laterally bent offset screw driver which cooperates with a pin extending from said stamping, and a deeply slotted wedge block backed up by said pin to lock any door from the inside. Embodied with upper and lower edges of the stamping are a bottle opener, a safety bottle cap applicator and remover, which may also be used as a golf shoe cleat replacing wrench.

MULTI-PURPOSE KEY RING TOOL AND DOOR LOCK SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Pocket knives, for years, have been made in rather complicated forms to include a variety of different kinds of abbreviated shop tools such as scissors, punches, screw drivers, etc.
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a unique door lock and general utility tool which is specially adapted to be carried on a key ring.
Another object is to provide such a door lock which will include a bi-pin wrench having multi-purpose utility as a tool by which safety bottle caps disclosed in the co-pending application of Wilfred Tunstall, Ser. No. 727,627, now US. Pat. No. 3,485,402, may be readily applied or removed and by which cleats or spikes with which golf shoes are conventionally equipped may be tightened or replaced.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a diagrammatic enlarged horizontal sectional view through a door jamb showing a preferred form of the invention applied as a door lock.
FIG. 2 is a side elevational view of said invention with the latter positioned as shown in FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENT The inventionis disclosed in the drawings as comprising a door lock which is small enough to be conveniently carried on a key ring 11, the preferred embodiment of the device being enlarged to twice its normal size in the drawings to facilitate the illustration thereof.
The door lock 10, includes a flat metal stamping 12 the thickness of which may vary but is preferably made from ten to twenty guage sheet metal and is preferably about 1% inches long and seven-eighth inch wide. In outline, the stamping 12 has the appearance of a sterotyped billy goat and tapers in outline towards an apertured nose 13 at the front end thereof which is bent laterally so that said key ring may be received in the aperture thereof while an adajacent portion of said ring is flush with the plane of the back face 14 of said stamping. At the rear end of the stamping 12 this is provided with a hook element 15 which is bent laterally at a right angle from the stamping in the same direction as the apertured nose l3 and is die shaped to form an offset screw driver.
The lower edge of the stamping 12 adjacent the hook element 15 is shaped symmetrically to provide a relatively deep recess 16 opposite edges of which converge inwardly, said recess terminating at the mouth thereof in symmetrically spaced feet 17, the latter being provided to serve the function of a bi-pointed wrench 18. The upper edge of the stamping 12, directly opposite the wrench 18, is shaped asymmetrically by the formation of a recess 19 which at its front end underlies and cooperates with the adjacent upper edge of the stamping to provide a rearwardly pointed horn 20. The forwardly tapered head portion 25 of the stamping 12 has a pin 26 which extends laterally from the stamping in the same direction as the nose l3 and hook element 15.
The door lock 10 includes a deeply slotted wedge shaped block 27, the slot 28 of which extends from the narrow end of the block to within a short distance from the wide end thereof and divides the block into a relatively thin leg 31 and a thick leg 32. An apertured lug 33 extends outwardly from the thick end of the block on the opposite side thereof from said thin leg and the aperture of said lug has an endless bead chain 34 extending therethrough said chain also being looped through the key ring 11 so as to loosely secure the wedge block 27 to the stamping 12.
The manner in which the door lock 10 performs its primary function is illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2. This function is to lock a door 40 from the inside and prevent its unauthorized opening from the outside regardless of whether or not the person seeking adrmttance has a key to the door. To utilize the door lock 10 in this manner, the wedge block 27 is removed from slideable association with the stamping l2 and the latter is placed with the hook element 15 thereof inserted in the door latch opening 41 in the striker plate 42 of the door jamb 43, while the door 40 is swung open. With the key ring 11 positioned as shown in FIG. 1 relative to the stamping 12, the door 40 is now closed into the full line position in which it is shown in FIG. 1. The wedge block 27 is now slipped downwardly over the stamping 12 with the thin leg 31 of the block engaging the pin 26 as shown in FIG. 3 and with the thick leg 32 of the block juxtaposed opposite the door 40 so as to effectively prevent the opening of the door 40 from the outside while the door lock 10 is so positioned.
To remove the lock 10 from the door, it is merely necessary to lift upwardly on the wedge block 27 so as to disassociate this from sliding relation with the stamping 12. The door 40 may then be readily opened permitting the hook element 15 of the stamping 12 to be readily withdrawn from the door latch opening 41 which clears the door jamb 43 for normal opening and closing of the door 40. I
As above stated, the door lock 10 has other functions than that of locking a door. These include the use of the rearwardly pointed horn 20 for removing push bottle caps, particularly the conventional crown bottle caps used for closing soft drink bottles. The offset screwdriver 15 is adapted for use as a screw driver or for prying open jar caps and for numerous other functions requiring a prying action.
The bi-pointed wrench 18 is applicable to the authorized control of the safety bottle cap disclosed in the Tunstall patent application (supra) and is also useful in tightening or replacing cleats and spikes with which golf shoes are conventionally fitted.
We claim:
1. An emergency door lock provided for association with a closed door and a door latch striker plate having a latch opening, to enable said door to be locked in closed position, from within a room having said door, said lock comprising:
a flat sheet metal stamping;
a short offset screw driver means bent laterally from one end of said stamping for hooking into said latch opening, with said stamping lying flat between said door and said striker plate and extending therefrom into said room;
pin means provided on said stamping and extending in the same direction laterally therefrom as said screw driver means and a sufficient distance from the latter to provide a space between said pin means and said striker plate; and
a bifurcated wedge comprising two legs separated by a deep slot, said legs slideably straddling said stamping between said pin means and said striker plate on one side of said stamping and abutting against said door on the other side of said stamping to provide an emergency lock preventing the opening of said door from the outside.
2. An emergency door lock as recited in claim 1 including a key ring; and
an apertured nose bent from the opposite end of said stamping and in the same direction as said screw driver means for attaching said stamping to said key ring.
3. An emergency door lock as recited in claim 1 wherein one of said wedge legs is relatively thin and the other wedge leg is relatively thick, saidthin leg being adapted to engage said pin means, and sad thick wedge leg being adapted to engage the inside face of said door to hold the latter closed.
Claims (3)
1. An emergency door lock provided for association with a closed door and a door latch striker plate having a latch opening, to enable said door to be locked in closed position, from within a room having said door, said lock comprising: a flat sheet metal stamping; a short offset screw driver means bent laterally from one end of said stamping for hooking into said latch opening, with said stamping lying flat between said door and said striker plate and extending therefrom into said room; pin means provided on said stamping and extending in the same direction laterally therefrom as said screw driver means and a sufficient distance from the latter to provide a space between said pin means and said striker plate; and a bifurcated wedge comprising two legs separated by a deep slot, said legs slideably straddling said stamping between said pin means and said striker plate on one side of said stamping and abutting against said door on the other side of said stamping to provide an emergency lock preventing the opening of said door from the outside.
2. An emergency door lock as recited in claim 1 including a key ring; and an apertured nose bent from the opposite end of said stamping and in the same direction as said screw driver means for attaching said stamping to said key ring.
3. An emergency door lock as recited in claim 1 wherein one of said wedge legs is relatively thin and the other wedge leg is relatively thick, said thin leg being adapted to engage said pin means and sad thick wedge leg being adapted to engage the inside face of said door to hold the latter closed.
