PILE EOE MANUEAGTUEE 0E EoN SHEETS.
No. 366,152. Patented July 5, 1887.
EENEE INWUIIM zal! rb rmwrlu MEME-E WITNESS'ES: INVENTOR,
ROBERT A. CARTER, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ON E- HALF TO PHILLIPS, NIMIOK & OO., OF SAME PLACE.
PILE FOR MANUFACTURE OF IRON SHEETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,152, dated .lfuly 5, 1887.
Application filed November 24, 1886. Serial No. 5219.795. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern.-
.Be it known that I, ROBERT A. CARTER, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania., a citizen of the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Piles for the Manufacture of VIron Sheets, &c., of which improvements the fol-lowing is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specification, Figure l is a plan view of my improved plate or cover for piles. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a pile embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a modification of my invention.
The invention herein relates to certain improvements in piles for the subsequent manufacture of sheets, plates, merchant bars, &c.
In 'an application of even date herewith I have shown, described, and claimed a plate or cover for piles having grooves or projections on one or both sides for the purpose of permitting the permeation of heat throughout the pile and the escape of slag or cinder therefrom.
The object of the invention herein is to utilize a form of scrap-iron which has heretofore been unavailable for the purpose of forming piles, and thereby saving the expense of the manufacture of mucleiron or scrapbar for thatV purpose.
In the practice of thel invention herein the the plates l, having the grooves` 2 and 3, are formed in the manner described in the application above referred to, and on one of these plates, arranged with its grooved face uppermost, are placed in the manner similar to that employed in forming the ordinary piles a series of what I term bars or plates,77 which are formed by flattening the scrap ends of pipes or sections of pipes under a hammer.
These scrap ends are formed in the manufacture of pipe, it being always necessary to cut off a portion from each end of a pipe, either for the purpose of removing defective ends or for bringing .the pipe to a standard length. These scrap ends have heretofore been melted down in furnaces or otherwise utilized. I
another plate or cover, these plates being preferably formed with a series of grooves or projections for the purpose of facilitating the heating of the inner portions of the piles.
In lieu of using the attened pipe-scrap for a filling in connection with my grooved covers, a plate, 5, may be used, or a series of muckbar sections, as in the usual practice of forming piles.
I claim herein as my invention- 1. A pile having, in combination, plates or covers, and a filling formed of flattened pipe scrap ends or sections, substantially as set forth. A
2. A pile having, in combination, grooved plates or covers, and a filling of flattened pipe scrapy ends or sections, substantially as set forth.
3. A pile having its body portion formed of attened pipe scrap ends or sections, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ROBERT A. CARTER.
I/Vitnesses:
DARWIN S. WoLcoTT, R. H. WHITTLEsEY.
