BEER COOLER.
PatentedJuly 5, 1887.,

UNITED STATES PATENT rerun.
EDWVARD JIEION' LIDDIOOA'I AND ALBERT WV. UTZINGER, OF ASTORIA,
OREGON.
BEER-COOLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,011, dated July 5, 1887.
Application filed August 7. 1886. Serial No. 210,301.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, EDWARD JIIoN LIDDI- con and ALBERT W. UTZINGER, both of Astoria, in the county of Olatsop and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Beer-Cooler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to an apparatus for cooling beer or other beverage kept on draft; and the invention has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and durable cooler of this class, which may be quickly attached to and removed from the kegs holding the beverage, and will operate effectively to cool the beverage with a comparatively small quantity of ice.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts of the cooler and its combination with the beer-keg and its tap, all as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of the improved beer-cooler attached to a beer-keg as when in use. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional elevation ofthe cooler and keg. Fig. 3 is a front view thereof; and Fig. 4. is a sectional plan View of the cooler.
The beer-cooler is made with a box, A, hav ing a back wall, a, a front wall, a, two side walls, a a", and a bottom, (5, the walls a a? a being made with double airspaces, as at a (d, which preferably are lined with paper or other approved material being a nolrconductor of heat. The two inner vertical partitions of the front and side walls are lower than their outer sheathing to give room at the top of the box A for a removable cover, B, the space below which forms a chamber, D, in which the beer-cooling coil and ice are placed, as pres ently explained. Above the cover B there is provided an airspace, b, above which an outer removable cover, E, is placed.
To the back of the cooler-box A there is fixed a round block, F, of proper size to fit within the front chine, g, of a beer-keg, G, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The back wall, a, of the box A and also the block F are (No model.)
slotted vertically at their centers for a considerable distance from their tops, as at a? f, respectively, to allow passage of a tap, II, fixed in thehead of the beer-keg, into these slots as the cooler is raised to enter the block F within the chine of the keg, and when this is done hooks t on the ends of two metal straps or rods, I I, will be engaged with the rear chine, g, of the keg, and when thumb-nuts J J on the outer ends of the rods I I are tightened outside the front of the cooler the hook-rods I i will hold the cooler securely to the front end of the keg. The clamp-rods I pass through the upper air-space, b, of the cooler, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2. After the cooler is at tached to the keg, as above described, a slide, K, which is fitted to the vertical slot a of the back wall of the box A, will be inserted or slid into said slot, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and will rest on the tap II. A packing, L, of rubber or other suitable material, is fixed to the cooler and interposed between the front end or chine of the keg G and the back wall of the cooler to insure a tight joint of the cooler to the keg and prevent passage of air to the interior of the cooler.
In the bottom of the ice-chamber D of the cooler there is placed a coil, M, of pipe, one end of which will be connected by a unioncoupling with the tap H, and its other end is connected with a tap, N, outside of the coolerbox, and from which the beer will be drawn as required.
Ice 0 will be filledintothe chamberD around and over the cooling-coil M, and when the covers B E are applied at the top of the cooler all is ready for use. A tap or faucet, P, allows drainage of water from the ice-chamber.
It is obvious that the beer will be cooled as it stands in or passes through the ice-covered coil M on its way to the cooler-tap N; hence the beer may always be delivered to the consumer at an agreeable temperature.
To remove the cooler from an empty keg and attach it to a full keg requires but a few minutes time, as it is only necessary to remove the covers E B and the slide K and disconnect the tap H from the coil M and loosen the thumbnuts J of the clamp-rods I and detach the rod-hooks i from the keg, whereupon the coolermay be drawn outward to cause its block F to clear the chine g of the keg, and the cooler may then be lowered from the tap of the empty keg and adjusted to the tap and tion.
. Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a beer-cooler, ofa refrigerating-box, as at A, slotted at a", and provided with a block, F,-slotted at f, a slide or cover, K, fitted to the slot a and hook straps or rods Ii, having nuts J or equivalent tighteners, all adapted for operation substantially as herein set forth.
, 2. The combination, with the refrigeratingbox A, having a slot at the back to receive the tap of a beer-keg and a slide or cover fitted to said slot, ofa packing, L, for interposition between the cooler-box and the keg, substantially as shown and described.
In a beer-cooler, the refrigerating-box A, slotted at af and provided with a block, I, slotted at f, and a slide or cover, K, a pipecoil, M, placed in the ice-chamber of the box A and provided with a tap, N, and hook straps or rods I 2', having nuts J or equivalent tighteners, in combination with a beer-keg, G, having a tap, H, connected to one end of the coil M and entering the slots a f of the cooler, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.-
EDWARD JHON LIDDIGOAT. ALBERT 1V. UTZINGER.
