Be itknown that I, HENRY J. ENNIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington city, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Cigarette-Vending Apparatus; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawlugs, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which ,form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improve ments in that class of apparatus for distributing and delivering cigarettes for sale, in which is provideda series of devices so arranged relatively in a casing containing the cigarettes that by depositing a coin through a suit-able aperture at the top of the casing the weight will operate certain trip mechanismto release or drop one cigarette into a drawer below, and the drawer be unlocked, so that it can be drawn out and the cigarette removed, while the coin will be deposited in a safe receptacle.

The invention consists in certain details of construction,hereinafterspecilied,and pointed out in the claims.

The objects of myinvention are attained by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved apparatus. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with the side removed to show the operating mechanism. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section. Referring to the drawings, the letter Aindicates a cabinet or casing of any suitable material and of any ornamental form,which contains the cigaretterceeptacle B, which is a segmental chamber constructed ofsheet metal, having a closed side, 0, and an open side opposite thereto, through which the cigarettes are inserted. At the lower end of the receptacle D is a vertical chamber, E, into which the cigarettes-fall, and from which they are discharged one at a time into a drawer, G, which has a space arranged to contain a single cigarette alone. The space is open at the bottom,so as to drop a cigarette out onto ashelf, H, as required. Y

The front of the cigarettc-receptacle is pro- .vided with a hinged shelf, I, which is auto- 'maticall y raised and lowered by a rocking 1ever, K, when the drawer is drawn out to permit a fresh cigarette from the receptacle to take the place of the one dropped out-below. This lever, through the medium of a spring, K, holds the shelf down normally, and is caused to raise it by means of an adjustable set-screw, L, passing through astud, L, secured to drawer. The drawer is provided with a slot, M, through which passes a stop, N, which limits its movement.

The letter P indicates a curved guide or chute, the upper part of which is curved and the lowerpart vertical. The said guide or chute has grooved ways at its sides, which guide the coin from the deposit-aperture to the lower end of the chute. Near said lower end is a weighted trip-lcver, R, attached to the chute, which normally engages a notched bar, S, secured to a stud rising from one side of the drawer, so as to lock the drawer when closed. The lever is provided with an arm, T, against which the coin strikes when dropped, and swings the lever free from the notched bar, so as to unlock the drawer and permit it to be drawn out and allow the coin to be de posited in a receptacle, U.

The casing at each side is provided with hinged doors VV, which open outward. The

door Vis provided with aloclt,\'V,of ordinarydescription, and the door V with a staple, X, which is engaged by an angle-lever, Y,when pressed back by the spring-rod Z, which is operated by the door V when the same is closed and locked, so as tolock the whole case simul taneously.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
