Description
ooooooo 1.5' `l H. NLBMLEY@ LLLLLLLLL R.
7 .170.365,773. Patented July 5, 1887.
ATEN erich.
I-IIRAM MUNROE BAILEY, OF FAIRWTER, MINNESOTA.
LAND-RoLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,773, datedJuly 5, 1887.
Application filed February 19, 1887. Serial No. 228,170. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM Mormon BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairwater, in the county of Winona and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Land-Rollers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Like letters refer to the same parts throughout the several views.
The invention relates to land-rollers, and has for its object to simplify, cheapen, and render more efficient in operation this class of devices.
I accomplish these objects in the manner hereinafter specified, shown in the drawings, and afterward particularly defined in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective View of a land-roller constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in section.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A represents the frame, composed of the cross-bar i a and the side bars, a.
Bis the tongue, secured to said crossbar and provided with a cross-brace, Z), as shown. To the rear side of the cross-bar a, I secure the staples C, preferably two in number.
D I) are hangers connected at one end with the staples O in such a manner as to move thereon 'in any direction. In the drawings I have shown them as provided with a hole and sleeve directly on said staples; but I do not intend to limit myself to such construction, as it is evident that they may be connected in other ways (for instance, by means of an intervening link) without departing from my invention. The free ends of these hangers are provided with projecting pins 'or stub-axles d, and the f'ree ends of the side bars, a, of the frame are provided with similar pins or stubaXles, e. I
E E are rollers, preferably, though not necessaril y, three in number. journaled upon the stubaxles d and e, asshown in the drawings, in such a manner as to allow the said rollers to freely rotate thereon.
On the stub-axles e, I place suitable collars, e', to keep the outer rollers from binding against the side bars of the frame; but between the inner ends of the outer rollers and the middle roller no such collars are necessary, as the free ends of the hangers which carry thc stub-axles d serve this function, as will be readily understood. v
F is the seat, secured near one end of the bar G, which is pivotally secured at its outer end to the cross-brace b ofthe tongue, as shown.l
The bar G is supported intermediate of its ends upon the bar II, which in turn is supported upon the legs or arms li, the lower ends of which are bifurcated and embrace and rest upon the hangers. f
The operation is apparent. The flexibility of the hangers and their connections, and consequently the axles of the rollers, allows the latter to readilyT accommodate themselves to the inequalitiesof the ground over which they are traveling.
The construction is simple and'durable, and the device is very efficient in operation.
Having thus described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the frame and tongue, of the cross brace b on said tongue, hangers D, pivotally connected with said frame and carrying stub axles, the rollers, the bar H, the bifurcated arms h, embracing the hangers, and the seat-bar G, pivotally connectedl at one end to the cross-brace b and supported. bysaid bar H, all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HIRAM DIUNROE. AILEY.
NVitnesses J. PLURc-AN, F. CHURCHILL.
