' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN W. MINIUM, OF MAZEPPA, PENNSYLVANIA.-
BOX-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,401, dated June 28, 1887. Application filed March 22. 1887. Serial No. 231,977. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN W. MINIUM,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Ma zeppa, in the county of Union and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Box-Fastenings, of which the following is a specification. I
The invention relates to improvements in boxfastenings, and its object. is to provide a device of simple and cheap construction that will not be liable to get out of order that will engage the top or lid of the box when the latter is dropped thereon, and that will not be liable to accidentally open; and it consists in the construction of the catch and the combination thereof with the spring and other parts, as hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
.o In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a box l1aving the invention attached. Fig. 2 is avertical section .on the line as w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the catch detached.
Fig. 4 is aperspective view of the spring detached. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the box.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates a box provided at its ends, a suitable distance below its top, with the cleats era, and
B is the cover or lid, having the end pieces,
I) b, which fit down' on the ends of the box and rest upon the cleats a. The meeting edges of the end pieces,b b, and the corresponding cleats,
a a, are provided with the depressions C C,
respectively, each having the rectangular shoulder a at its end and the concave, beveled,
and inclinedsurface 0 running outward therefrom.
D is a recess or small chamber formed partly in the side of the box and partlyin the meeting side of the cleat, to the rear of the depression 0, and E is a wire spring coiled in said recess.
The free end e of said spring extends through lid is put in place, the lower rounded end of the catch at each end of the box passes down through the mouth (I of the recess D, and shoving the spring to one side passes below it and engages it in the notch e. The lid has no side strips, nor are any necessary, as when it is placed 011 the box itimmediately locks itself.
The device is a simple and effective boxfastener, and is not liable to be opened accidentally, as the end of the spring E is protected by the edges of the'depressions O 0.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The combination, with the lid and the catch F, secured thereto, having the notch f in one edge, of the box provided with a recess in its side, and the coiled spring arranged in said recess, and having its end engaged by the notch f in the catch, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the box A, provided with the cleats a, the depressions O,and the recesses D, having the notches e, and the springs E in said recesses, of the lid or cover '15, provided with the end pieces having the depressions O, and the catches F, each having a rounded end part and anotch, e, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN \V. MINIUM.
