JOURNAL-BOX AND LUBRICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,246, dated June 21. 1887- (No model.)

Be it known that I, ALBURTIS EAGLE, a
citizen of the United States, residing at North ampton, in the county of Bucks, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Journal-Boxes and Lubrieators, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a journal-box and lubricator embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 represents a view of the interior thereof. Fig. 4 represents a transverse section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of ajournal-box and lubricator having certain novel features, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and claimed.
Referring to the drawings; A represents the journal-box formed of suitable material, and B represents the journal or axle located therein.
0 represents a lubricator cup or box,which is formed of suitable material, and located either aside of the box A or above the same, as shown by the dotted lines, Fig. 2.
In the wall D of the box is a duet, E, which leads horizontally from the bottom of the cup 0 to the bottom of the chamber F of the box, which contains the journal B. The inner sides of the lower portion of said chamber F are beveled or flaring, as at G, whereby said sides are set out from the adjacent sides of the journal 13, the outer side walls of the box A furnishing the bearings for the shaft.
\Vhen the cup 0 is on top of the box A, the d uct E extends vertically through the wall D, as seen by the dotted lines, Fig. 2, and is then deflected in the direction of the full lines of the duct E to the bottom of the chamber F.
The cup 0 has a supplycpening, H, which is closed by a cap, J, and likewise an opening the latter and so carried around the chamber F, whereby the journal is thoroughly lubricated. Every particle of lubricant in the cup may be directed into the chamber, so that the lubrication continues, even if the supply is low. Some of the lubricant reaches the sides of the lower portion of the chamber F, and would be taken up by the sides of the journal 13 directly to the side openings of the box A, and thus caused to escape, were it not for the fiaringsides of said lower portion of the chamber, which increase the width of said chamher and permit the oil to return thereinio, while the portion of the axle contiguous to the journal is properly lubricated without the lubricant being necessarily forced out through the side openings of the box, which would be occasioned if the sides of thejournal B were in close contact with the lower portion of the chamber F.
The box and cup are made in sections, each section being preferably cast in one piece of metal.
I am aware that it is not new to form ajournal-box having flaring inner sides; neither is it new to provide the same with a lubricatorcup leading into the journal-chamber, nor to provide the cup with a glass covering, where by the contents thereof may be readily seen, and such I do not c.lain1;but I am not aware that the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts herein set forth,whereby a cheap, serviccable, and efficient device is obtained, are old.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desi re to secure by Letters Patent, is.
A combined journal-box and lubricator consisting of thejourual-box A, with chamber F, the outer side walls of which furnish the bearings for the shaft, the said chamber having beveled inner sides at the lower portion thereof, and the lubricator-cup O,with the duct E, leading to the lowest part of chamber F, said parts being combined and operating substantially as described.
