ATTACHMENT FOR WASH-STANDS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,479, dated June '7, 1887.

Be it known that I, J. XVARD CHILDS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Wash- Stands; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an attachnient'for wash-stands, and has for its object to facilitate the withdrawal of the slop-jar from the lower part of the stand when it is desired to empty the basin therein. This object is attained by the combination, with the lower part of the wash-stand and with a supporting board or tray for the jarso hinged or pivoted as to allow one end thereof to swing out horizontally part way through the opening in front of the stand when the dooris opened, of friction-rollers fitted under the board and a spring fitted to bear against its inner end, so as to force the board out automatically when the door is opened, the closing of the door operating to push the board back within the stand,and thereby conr press the spring.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of a wash-stand with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2is a central vertical section taken transversely through the lower part of the wash-stand, with the door closed and the jar'board swung in; Fig. 3, a plan view, partly broken away, illustrating an auxiliary device for coupling thejar-looard to the door; and Fig. 4, a central vertical section at a right angle to the door at its outer end, illustrating a modification of the invention.

A represents a wash'stanchwhich may be of any approved form, having a lower compartment, B, therein devoted to the reception of a slop-jar, G, and closed by a swinging door, I), in the customary manner.

My invention is applicable as an attachment to wash-stands already constructed and now in use, as it may be fitted thereto without requiringany material change or modification in the construction thereof. It consists of a movable horizontal jar board or tray, E, adapted to fit easily into the bottom of the compartment B. The inner end of thejanboard proximate to the hinges of the door is pivoted centrally to the side of the compartment, the hingedconnection being formed by means of an eye and staple, F, or other simple pivotal device, so that the outer end of the board will be free to swing in and out of the compartment through the doorway. This outward move ment of the j ar-board is produced automatically by means'of a spring, K, inserted between the inner rear end of the jarboard and the casing of the stand, and is facilitated by means of friction-rollers G G let into the bottom board of the compartment, so that the jar-board may rest and roll thereon. These rollers GG may be spherical in form, or may consist of wheels whose axes are so fixed as to be radial to the pivotal center or hinge F of the board.

The board may be arrested, when its front end has been carried fully out from the stand, by means of a stop-pin, as at H, Fig. 1, so located as to prevent the board from being drawn out far enough to permit it or the jar resting thereon to tip it over.

The board andjar will be readily forced back into the stand by the closing of the door.

To obtain and facilitate the outward movement of the board andjar, a spring K is i11- serted between the inner rear end of the jarboard and the casing of the stand. The spring K,being compressed when the board is forced inward, will by its resiliency operate to push it outward as the door is opened.

A chain, J, or, as an equivalent, a hinged link, M, may be interposed between the door and board, so as to admit of readydetachment therefrom to serve, when desired, as an auxiliary to the spring K in producing an outward movement of the board.

In the use of my invention, when the door is opened, the board E, carrying the jar, is forced out by the spring far enough to bring the jar into proper position for convenient use. By closing the door the movable board is forced in again, carrying thejar with it.

As an equivalent for the spring K, or as an auxiliary device, Icontemplate mounting the board upon rollers G G, so arranged (as illustrated in Fig. 4) in the bottom of the stand as to give to the outer free end of thehi nged board an. inclination to the front, whereby when the door D is opened the board will automatically, by reason of its gravity, swing outward. The friction rollers G and G, fitted under the board, permit it to move freely and noiselessly, as required.

I do not claim as new a swinging shelf coupled to the door of a compartment so as to be drawn out of the compartment by the door as it is opened and be forced in by the closing of the door, as such a device is well known in connection with the shelves and doors of stoveovens.

I claim as my invention- The combination, in a wash-stand, with a door closing a compartment in the bottom scribing witnesses.
