KALAFSKY ATTORNEYS BACKGROUND OF'II-IE INVENTION In known coin-operated newspaper dispensers, the newspapers are simply stacked in acontaincr and, therefore, the customer, once he has opened the door by proper coin deposit, may take as many newspapers as he desired.

SUMMARY OF THE. INVENTION it is a principal objectof, this invention toprovide a coinoperated newspaper dispenser which,,when the door thereof is released by proper coin deposit, onlyonegnewspaper may be removedby the customer.

Another object of this invention, is to provide a newspaper dispenser in whichthespring-loadeddoorfthereof is held in open position by a {detent .ntechanism ,nntil the exposed newspaper isrernoved mrer assj ne detenftrneehimi m fpr spring closing movementofthe doonto locked position.

The door 9 is.mounted fonhorigontal rnovementon suitable guides 16 and springs 17 are clonneete d thereto onopposite sides to yicldablypullthe door 9 in the locked position, whereat the latch member 15 thereof is engaged with the coin box lock member 14.

Spaced below the top of the cabinet 2 and in front of the folded edge of the stack of newspapers 5 is a lock plate assembly I8 comprising a series of spring-loaded plates 19, 20, ,and 21 which are variably, spaced apart as shown so that at least the top plate 19 will, in the closed position of the door 9, overlie the top newspaper5 adjacent the fold thereof and the remaining ones 20, and 21 may abut the top newspaper 5 as shown in FIG. 2, or in the case of a thin newspaper 5, the second plate 20 or the second and third plates 20 and 21 may be disposedbetween the first and second newspapers 5 and/or between the second and third newspapers. Plates l9, 20, and 21 are actuated by springs 22 as best shown in FIGS. 3 and 4.

The door 9 is provided with a pivoted hook 23 (see FIGS. 2, 6, 7, and8) which, whenthe door 9 is unlocked by proper deposit of a coin or coins in the slots 12 and is pulled out wardly, is operativeto engage and withdraw the top plate 19.

Cooperating cars 24 on said plates 19, 20, and 21 effect withdrawal of anyother plates 20 or 21 that are above the top newspaper 5.or between the first and second newspapers 5 so .thatby. the time that the plates 19, 20, and 21 are pulled back to the FIG. 7, position, thetop newspaper 5 is released so that the elevator platform 6 may raise the stack so that the top newspaper 5 is disposed against the transparent backup plate At .that. time, the hook 23 is swung around to release the lock plates 19, 20 and 21 so that at least the top one 19 will enter between thetop and second newspapers 5. cabinet movable to open position to expose the top newspaper and 21 so that subsequently when. the door 9 moves inward, the book 23 will assume the position shown in FIGS. 2 and 6 preparatory to. withdrawing the lock plate 19, the next time that the door 9 is unlocked and pulled outwardly.

' It is to be understood that a suitable chute (not shown) may be provided for the coins so as to render them, readily accessible when the newspaper delivery man, unlocks the rear door 3 for reloading of the dispenser 1.

Although the lock plates-19, 20, and 21 are spring-loaded,

further to be understood that while the door 9 herein is shown niihnvlng ahorizontnlsilding movement, it could be mounted cessively moved downwardly as newspapers 5 are withdrawn.

Iclaim:

1. A dlspenscr for newspapers and the like comprising a cabinet to receive a stack of newspapers; a door on said for removal; a coin-operated lock mechanism to release the door for such movement; and lock plate means actuated by door openingmovement to uncover the top newspaper for removal and to cover the second newspaper so that only the top newspaper can be removed each time that said door is opened.

2. The dispenser of claim 1 wherein said cabinet has eleva- .tor means to elevate the stack of newspapers each time that said lock plate means'uncovers the top newspaper; and

wherein said lock plate means is spring-actuated and is released from said door upon opening thereof to cover the second newspaper.

3. The dispenser of claim 1 wherein detent means in said cabinet holds said door in open position until the top newspaper is removed; and wherein spring means acting on said door closes it when said detent means is released therefrom by removal of the top newspaper.

4. The dispenser of claim 1 wherein said lock plate means includefl at least one plate which is spring actuated to overlie the folded edge of the top newspaper; and wherein said door has pivoted hook means to engage said plate to withdraw said plate as said door is opened and to release said plate for movement to a position between the top and second newspapers in overlying relation to the folded edge of the second newspaper.

The dispenser of claim 1 wherein said lock plate means includes upper and lower plates which are spring-actuated toward the folded edge of the top newspaper with at least the upper plate overlying the top newspaper and the lower plate either abutting the folded edge of the top newspaper or overlying the second newspaper; and wherein said door has pivoted hook means to engage said upper plate to withdraw it as said door is opened; said plates having interengaging means thereon similarly to withdraw said lower plate; said hook means being operative upon opening of said door to release said plates for movement of said upper plate between the top and second newspapers in overlying relation to the folded edge of the second newspaper and of said lower plate either to abutting relation to the folded edge of the second newspaper or between the second and third newspapers.

6. The dispenser of claim 5 wherein said cabinet has elevator means to elevate the stack of newspapers each time that said lock plate means is withdrawn as aforesaid whereby the top newspaper is disposed above said upper plate for removal.

7. A dispenser for newspapers and the like comprising a cabinet to receive a stack of newspapers and having in its top wall a window through which the top newspaper may be viewed and a slot through which such top newspaper may be withdrawn; a door on the front wall of said cabinet having a plate underlying said slot; said door being movable to open position whereat said plate is displaced so that the top newspaper is accessible for removal through said slot; a coinoperated lock mechanism to release the door for such movement; and lock plate means actuated by door opening movement to uncover the top newspaper for removal and to cover the second newspaper so that only the top newspaper can be removed through said slot each time that said door is opened.

The dispenser of claim 7 wherein said cabinet has elevator means to elevate the stack of newspapers each time that said lock plate means uncovers the top newspaper; and wherein said lock plate means is spring-actuated and is released from said door upon opening thereof to cover the second newspaper.

9. The dispenser of claim 7 wherein detent means in said cabinet holds said door in open position until the top newspaper is removed; and wherein spring means acting on said door closes it when said detent means is released therefrom by removal of the top newspaper.
