IMPROVEMENT IN DREDGlNG-MACHINES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN H. NEwooMB, of Port Norris, county of Cumberland, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Dredging Oysters, Goal,.or other Sunken Objects; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists in attaching to the frame of the ordinary dredgingmachine now in common use guards or fenders so constructed as to act as aids to the teeth inperforniingtheir functions in thepdredging process, and also to prevent the teeth from catching or becoming fastened under the rails or chocks 'of the vessel as the dredging apparatus is being lifted or conveyed from the water to the deck of the vessel, and to facilitate generally the process of hauling or lifting the dredging apparatus on board the vessel.

In order to enable others to make and use my invention, I will `proceed to describe its construction. y g

To the lower frame, Fig. l, so as to form a part thereof, I attach two guards or fenders, as represented by c d c and c d e in Fig. 2, one on each side thereof, the arrangement of which is as follows One end of the guards or fenders is secured to the arms a a of the lower Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,324, dated May 20, 1862.`

From thence the guards or fenders extend forward toward the teeth until they reach the plane of the teeth at an elevation, d d', equal to that of the height of the teeth, at which point (l d' the direction is changed nearly at right angles toward the plate or bar in which the teeth are set, to which plate or bar the extremities of the guards or fenders may be attached by the ordinary means of a screw or bolt, as at the points e c'.

It will be observed that the guards or fenders, as thus attached, will, in eiect and operation, each constitute an additional tooth, which, being sharpened at the point d d by beveling or otherwise, is made to perform the functions of a dredging-tooth, while at the same time it acts as a guard or fender in protecting the dredging-teeth and in preventing them from catching or becoming fastened to the rails or chocks of the dredging-vessel as thedredging apparatus is being drawn or lifted on board.

What I claim, therefore, as my invention,

and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The application of guards or fenders c d e c d e to machines for dredging oysters, coal, or other sunken objects, said guards or fenders being constructed and operatin g substantially in the manner and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
