SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,628, dated November 16, 1886.-

To all, whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. NOLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Water-Heaters and SteamBoiler-s, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to water-heaters and steam-boilers, and it is especially adapted for use in heating greenhouses, dwellings, and railroad-cars, but may be used for other purposes.
The objects ofmy improvements are to make a water-heater or a steam-boiler which will be simple and economical in construction, have efficient and large amount of heating-surface, perfect circulation, be easily repaired, occupy the smallest possible space, and at the same time cause no danger from heat, no matter how close the space in which it is confined. I attain these objects by my improvements, which comprise certain novel parts and combinations of parts, which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the water-heater. Fig. 2 is a top View of. the water-heater with the hood removed.

Referring to the drawings, A A A are annular sections arranged one within the other. B is a cross tube or header placed under the annular sections A A A, with which it is connected by the pipes or tubes D D D.
' E is an annular section, which forms the casing of the boiler or heater, and is connected with the header B by the pipes or tubes F F.
O is a cross tube or header, placed above the annular sections A A A and E, and connected with them by the pipes or tubes G G G and G.
H H are the inlets' through which the water passes into the water-heater.
J J are the outlets through which thewater passes out of the water-heater to the circulatjug-pipes.
K is the hood.
L is the flue or chimney.
M is the fire-box, from which the heat passes through the spaces N N N to the chimney L.
In construction I prefer to make the annular sections A A Aand E conical, as shown on Fig. 1.

By making the header 0 larger and the outlets J. J smaller, the header 0 becomes a steam sep arator and the structure an excellent steamboiler. By'this construction a water-heater or a steam-boiler may be made which will 00- cupy less space than any water-heater or steamboiler heretofore made which will produce the same results.
In operation the water passes through the inlets H H to the annular section E, thence through the pipes F F to the header B, thence through the pipes D D D, the annular sections A A A, and the pipes G G G to the header 0, thence through the outlets J J to the circulating-pipes, through which the water passes and returnsto the inlets H H. The heat passes from the fire-box M through the spaces N N N N to the chimney L, thus giving a large amount of heating-surface and perfect circulation. The annular section or casing E, passing down, forms a fire-box, M, and being filled with water, no heat is wasted, and there is no danger of injuring the paint or setting tire to the woodwork when the water-heater is confined in a small space, such as is necessary in a railroad-car.
