SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,882, 'dated November 2, 1886,

Be it known that I, JAcoB MUTCHLER, a
-. citizeuof the United States, residing at Three Oaks, county Vof Berrien, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Thill and Pole Coupling, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object certain improvements below described and claimed.

Referring to the letters of reference marked on the drawings, D is the bracket secured to the axle A by clip i in the ordinary manner. The T-head c of the thill-iron P has a gain, a', ou each side, making a portion of it, alittle distance from the end, thinner and square-sided, instead of round, like the rest of the T-head, Figs. 3 and 5. On one side of the other end ofthe T- head is a little bud, t. The bracket D is chambered out, and open on top and in front in the ordinary manner. Through each side wall of the brackehis a hole to receive the ends ofthe T-head. On one side is a slot, a, cut down throughthe Wall into the hole. This s] ot is narrower than the diameter of the hole, and of width to receive the square portion of the T-head c. The other Wall of the bracket is provided on the inside with a guide-channel, e', down which the end of the T-head passes in coupling. The hole in this wall has a communicating recess, t', Fig. 4, to allow the bud t to pass through.
R is a rubber cushion in the back of the bracket-chamber, to compensate for the Wear of' the T-head.
In the operation, the thills or pole, the coupling being equally applicable to either, are held at an upright `angle with the T-heads resting on the brackets, which supports the Weight of the thills until guided to enter the slot and channel. The part between a' a,when in right position,passes down slot a, and the end of the T- head passes down the channel c until the T- head is at the holes in the bracket-walls. The thills are then moved laterally, the bud t guiding the T-head by passing through the recess t' till the T-head is in place, when the thills are swung down. In their used posi` tion the T-heads have the ordinary round surface in the holes of the brackets, where the wear comes.
