Description

(No Model.)
P. P. BENSON.
PLO'W.
N0. 351,420. Patented Oct. 26, 1886.
WITNESSES orney UNITED STATES ATENT Fries,
PINCKNEY PRUE BENSON, OF LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,420, dated October 26, 1886.
Application filed May 1, 1886. Serial No. 200,816.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, IINcKNEY PRITE BEN- SON, of Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in plows.
The object is to provide a plow in which the depth of out and rake of handles may be readily determined, and in which the plowblade may be adjusted up and down the standard.
A further object is to provide a plow-beam of improved construction, and to provide an extended heel for the standard, to make the plow-blade run smoothly and steadily.
IVith these ends in view my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the plow in perspective, and Fig. 2 is aplan view.
A represents the plow-beam. It consists of a single bar bifurcated at its rear end, and terminating at its forward end in a hook, a, for the attachment of the whiffletree or other draftconnecting device. Between the branches 0, of the rear end of the beam the plow-standard B is pivotally secured, preferably by means of a bolt, 11, which bolt also extends through the lower ends of the handle-braces O. The standard B consists of a fiat bar slightly curved edgewise, and provided at its lower end with an elongated heel, D, extending rearwardly from the foot of the standard and flush with the bottom thereof. The standard B is preferably formed of a single bar split into two branches, 1), a short distance below the plowbeam, and the heel D is welded or bolted between the lower ends of the branches; but the standard might be cast integral with the heel, or the heel might be bifurcated to receive the lower end of the standard and welded or bolted thereto, or the heel might be crushed into the lower end of the standard and welded (No model.)
thereto. Above the heel D the standard is provided with an elongated slot, 1?, extending through from the front to the rear edge, and the plow-blade E is secured to the front of the standard by means of one or more, preferably two, draw-bolts, c, which extend through the slotd. By loosening the nuts on the bolts 6 the plow-blade E may be shifted up or down 011 the standard, and locked in the desired adjustment by tightening the said nuts, thus causing the blade to out deeper or shallower, and compensating for any wear which the lower end of the blade may have suffered.
A curved brace, F, is secured at its upper end between the branches of the plow-beam in front of the standard, and extends through the standard above the plow-blade. The said curved brace is screw-threaded, and is provided with a pair of adjustingnuts, f, one in front of and one at the rear of the standard, by means of which the standard may be locked in any desired forwardly and backwardly swinging adjustment, and the depth of furrow thereby determined.
The handles Gare bolted to the beam at such a distance forward of the standard as may be found expedient to give them the desired rake, and are secured to the standardbraces 0, one to each brace, by draw-bolts g. A series of perforations, g, in the braces O render the handles adjustable to the desired height, as is common in plows hitherto constructed.
The jointer or colter H is secured to the plow-beam in any desired vertical adjustment, or adjustment toward and away from the plowstandard, by means of the clip I.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to adjust a plow-standard by a brace leading from the beam thereto, and that plow or cultivator blades have commonly been secured to the fronts of standards, and that plow-handles and colters have been secured to plow-beams in such a manner as to be locked in different adjustments; but I am not aware that a plow; possessing the features particularly set forth above has hitherto been in use or known.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
- In ap1ow,the combinatiomwithaplow-beam specification in the presence of two subscribbifuroated at its rear end, of the p1ow-standing witnesses. and pivotally secured between the branches T of said beam, the curved brace pivoted to the PINCKNEY PRUE BEL 5 beam, and the heel-piece secured to the stand- Witnesses:
ard, substantially as set forth. J. E. ENGLAND,
In testimony whereof I have signed this GUS STRAUs.
