PAPER BAG.
No. 351,378. PatentedOdt. 26, 1886.
WITNESEEE |I\J\/EI\ITUR \VILLIAJI P. HILL, OF SOMERVILLE, llIASSACl-IUSETTS.
PAPER BAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,378, dated October 26, 1886.
Application filed October 9, 1884. Serial No. 145,096.
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, XVrLLLur P. HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improve ment in Paper Bags, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a paper bag made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line 00 a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same on the liney y of Fig. 2.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of paper bags having a piece of twine or cord attached thereto for convenience in tying up the bag when filled; and my invention consists in the combination, with a paper bagfiof a piece of twine, cord, or tape permanently attached thereto by having a portion of its length inclosed within thepasted fold or seam extending along the bottom of the bag, whereby the twine, cord, or tape is easily and cheaply applied in the operation of making the bag, is out of the way when the bag is being filled, and is always securely confined along the bottom of the center of the bag without liability of slipping from this position, thus rendering the package more secure than where the cord is merely passed under the bottom of the bag in tying it up in. the ordinary manner.
In the said drawings, A represents a paper bag, which may be of any required size. In making up the bag a piece of twine, cord, or tape, 1), of the required length to properly tie up the bag when filled, is laid along the bottom, and permanently secured thereto by turning over the bottom fold, c, thereon and pasting it down in place, a portion, 5, of thelength of the twine, cord, or tape being thus inclosed within the bottom fold or seam, 0, while the (No model.)
ends 6 extend out upon opposite sides of the bag in a convenient position to be taken hold of and brought up around the bag to tie up the same when filled.
The application of the fastening-string to the bag involves very little additional labor or expense, as the usual bottom fold, c, is merely turned over and pasted down onto it, no additional strips of paper or auxiliary connecting device being required, and by locating the twine, cord, or tape along the bottom of the bag, as described, it is removed out of the way while the bag is being tilled and folded in at the mouth, and has the additional ad vantage of being securely confined along the bottom of the bag at the center, whereby the liability of its slipping off therefrom is entirely avoided and the package thus rendered stronger and more secure.
I am aware that paper bags have been made with strings permanently attached thereto at the sides, and also within a fold around the mouth of the bag; but I am not aware that a fastening-cord has ever been inclosed within the pasted fold or seam at the bottom of the bag. Hence I make no broad claim to a pa per bag having a fastening string or tape attached thereto; but
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a paper bag, A, of a single piece of twine, cord, or tape, 1), having a portion of its length inclosed within the pasted bottom fold or seam, c, and extending along the bottom of the bag, substantially in themanner and for the purpose set forth.
\Vitness my hand this 7th day of October, A. -D. 1881.
\VIL'LIA M P. HILL.
In presence of l. E. TESCIIEBIACHER, \V. J Qurnarne 1c.
