LOCK FOR FIRE-ARMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,262, dated October 19, 1886. Application filed hlareh 9, 1386. Serial No. 194.511. (No model.) kPatented in Belgium October 30, 1885, No. 70,619.

Beit known that I, Josnrrr GoL'rs'rErN, a resident of Liege, Kingdom ot Belgium, have invented an Improvement in Fire-Arms, (for one portion only of which I have obtained Letters Patent in Belgium, dated October 30, 1885, numbered 70,679,) of which the following is a complete specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which- Figures 1, 2, and 3 represent side views, partly in section, of those parts of a firearm to which my invention relates. Fig. 4 is a similar view of a modification of the same.
This invention :relates to an improvement in the connection of the mainspring of a tire-arm with the hammer and with other parts, by which its action is modified from time to time, the object being, principally, to cause the said inainspring to automatically bri-ng the hammer to a full-cock and hold it there at all times, except while the user is aiming and ring.
The invention consists, principally, in causing both arms of Jthe mainspring to act on the hammer alternately, and in combining it with means for controlling its several actions upon the hammer.
The invention is applicable to all kinds of tire-arms--such as ritles, Shotguns, revolvers, and the like-and may be usedon fire-arms having their hammers exposed, and also on those whose hammers are entirely concealed from View. In the drawings the latter class of arms alone is represented.
In these drawings, A represents the breechpiece of the firearm, and L the firing-pin.
B is a hammer, pivoted as usual, and connected with the upper wing, a, ot' the mainspring C by a link, Z). The lower wing, d, is adapted to rest on the shank e of the hammer. The wing c has a tendency to throw the hammer B against the iiring-pin, as in Fig. 3, and the wing d has a tendency to draw the hammer B away from the firing-pin, as in Figs. 1 and 2.
In the breech-piece A is pivoted,atf,a lever, D, which connects by a link, g, Fig. 3, with the lower wing, d, of the mainspring C. The link g can be dispensed with, as in Fig. 4, where a friction-roller, gi, is shown as interposed between the parts D and d. The lever D is at h jointed or otherwiseeonnected to a hand-piece, E, which at its rear portion connects with a sliding pin, F, that enters a socket in the stock or breech'piece A.
G isa trigger, engaging the hammer in the ordinary manner, H the trigger-plate, and M the guard.
By the act of iiring the hammer is thrown against the iiringpin L, as in Fig. 3, and immediately upon the hand-piece E being released the lower part or wing, d, of the mainspring presses or crowds thelever D downwardly, (see Fig. 1,) and by its contact with the shank e of the hammer throws the latter to thc position of full-cock, in which it is locked by the contact of the lever D with the trigger G. The parts are now in the position shown in Fig. 1, and remain in this position until aim i's taken. It will be seen from Fig. 1 that the pin] is in this position drawn partly out of its socket. By taking the gun in hand and drawing it against the shoulder the manipulator presses with the right hand on the vhand-piece E, drawing the same backward into t-he position which is shown in Fig. 2. By this act the lever D is turned on its pivot, so that it will raise the lower wing or part, d, of the mainspring oft' the hammer. The hammer is now only held by the trigger, and only connected with the upper wing or part, u, of the mainspring, which has a tendency to throw it against the ring-pin. The arm is now ready for the discharge, which takes place immediately the trigger Gr is touched, whereupon the hammer is thrown forward, as in Fig. 3. As soon as the manipulator ceases pressing the hand-piece E backward the lower wing of the spring d, which now bears on the shank ofthe hammer, will throw the latter' into the position of full-cock, as in Fig. 1. In order to enable this to be done, the lower wing or part, d, of the spring is made much more powerful than the upper wing or part, a, because the resistance of the part a must be overcome by the part d in order to bring the hammer from the position shown in Fig. 3 into that shown in Fig. 4.
